2% Retinol

What is the long term results of 2% of Retinol if all it does is make your face red and peeley?

That's all I'm getting after months and months of use. How is this supposed to work?

I know it's supposed to make the under layers come out and it is, but my face is perpetually red and peeling.

Is that all that happens? I look horrible in public. Is that it?

Anyone else using this stuff? How do you like it? Does it eventually get better after a year or longer?

Help?
Hair Vitamins?

I've been taking hair vitamins and yesterday I noticed pieces of hair sticking up from the top of my head and previously I've noticed hairs hanging out around the edges of my head.

I don't think it's broken hair because I've never had this before. I hope it's new hair growth because I've been taking hair vitamins and I'm on my second month supply, but hair doesn't grow that quickly.

Can hair vitamins make hair grow THAT fast or IS it really broken hair? I'm not doing anything differently, however I am taking prescribed medication that is making my hair more dry and does cause hair loss and it could be broken hairs all around the perimeter of my head and on the top of my head, but what are the hair vitamins doing?

The vitamins get five stars out of five stars for hair growth by users and the company gets great reviews as well.

Thanks,
SPIN PINS! For fine hair!

I have very thin, very fine hair. The kind of hair that can't hold a tease or a curl for more than 20 minutes. The kind of hair that makes the saddest, most pathetic bun you've ever seen on an adult. The kind of hair that you can never buy full-size hair holders for, children's sizes work better.

I was going to a wedding, and I knew I wanted an up-do, but I had no idea how I would/could get it to look nice and stay put. I brought about 10 possibilities with me, and on a whim I bought the set of 3 mini spin pins to try. (The full size are much too large for my hair.)

I used a little hold gel. I teased a little. (It's bad to over-tease, because people wonder why there's a rat's nest by my neck at the end of the night.) I made a loose bun, put in all 3 spin pins… and it seriously held all night. Seriously.
NOTHING has ever held my hair in place – especially in a bun – like that before.
And this was a really loose bun, so it would look larger than it really is.

Seriously, ladies – try these things. I'm sold. I may even wear a bun to work.

Reapplying SPF?????

How can a person reapply SPF every few hours if the person has a full face of makeup (foundation, concealer, setting powder, blush, eyeshadow, eyebrow pencil/powder, etc)??? It's impossible!!!

If you know, please tell us because I'm dying to know.

I use a sponge to apply my SPF 50, 60+ because it comes in liquid form. It would remove all of my makeup if I reapplied the SPF. My favorite SPFs do not come in spray form and I refuse to purchase another brand.

Thanks,
Thinking of trying henna

Hello all...Its been a super stressful and depressing year, I won't go into details, but now that the year is coming to a close and life is maybe just a wee bit brighter, I am getting fidgety to get some sort of makeover. Because I look like utter shit from neglecting myself. Anyway, I have very fine, thin hair that is very breakage prone. Some of it fell out this year due to all the stress; I don't think its permanent, but whats left has broken off so it looks thinner. I need a good trim for sure. Stylists always insist on a short cut for me because of my hair type but I simply can't do it, it would feel unnatural. Back when I was younger, I used to color my hair with Feria and it made it look thicker. (I havent colored my hair for at least six years.) Now, I worry it will add to damage. I was reading online that henna dye is actually good for hair? There were some women commenting that they also had fine, thin or breakage prone hair, and they were claiming that henna keeps the hair from breaking and, therefore, helps it to grow. I literally know nothing about henna, so any advice anyone on here can give me would be great! Is it really healthy? Can you still use heat styling tools with it? I worry I will try it and not like the outcome, so how hard is it to get rid of if this happens? What brand is best? I never knew anyone that used it, so have no reference point... Thank you!!!

Bun Maker

Hi Everyone:

The other day I went to Big K and bought a BUN MAKER for $5.99.

At first I was skeptical, but I tried it and it worked well! There is a tiny bun ring, an elastic and four hair pins in the box.

I wanted a BIG bun and the ring was small, however, to my surprise the bun made a BIG bun when I wrapped my hair around the ring, spreading my hair around the it and I inserted the pins in all four quadrants, N, E, S, and W regions. You may want to add your own extra pins for extra security to make it stay put.

Use an extra mirror to look at the top of your head and the back to make sure the ring isn't visible. There is the cut tights method as well, but I haven't tried that yet and I may never use it since I have the BUN MAKER.

Just a simple random survey. I've worn black eyeliner everyday since age 11. I either own or have owned all the drugstore brands. Never tried a high end one and dont know that it would make a difference either way. Just wanna see what the beautiful people on here buy, be it cheap or high end.

Eyebrow Stencil

Hi Everyone:

I over tweezed my eyebrows and they looked terrible, so I purchased eyebrow stencils.

They are really big and my eyes aren't big. I haven't used them yet, but I think I can use them half the width to fill in.

Actually, I've been blessed with nice eyebrows. They grow in fast and dark and they have an evil arch to them. I just wanted to even them out a bit, but if I use them, I'll definitely post.

Oh, and I saw on television the Christin Dior stick on liner (which I purchased, but haven't used) a lady used them and said they looked comical and were more for Halloween or for kiddies.

Healthy Beauty Tips

Have any of you considered a more natural approach for your beauty needs? We use so many products on ourselves on a daily basis, which means that we are also constantly applying whatever ingredients that are in those products on a skin to absorb everyday. The personal care industry is not highly regulated, so there is no guarantee that those ingredients in the products are harmless. Have any of you tried Miessence certified organic products before? These products smell absolutely beautiful and you'll feel healthier too knowing that they do not contain any harmful substances. If you haven't heard about them before or even tried them, I highly recommend them. You can check it out on http://www.teresaorganics.com
I believe that nature provides what is needed to keep ourselves beautiful and healthy. So natural beauty is one of the healthiest beauty tips that I usually give to people who wants to minimize toxins in their body. What do you think?

KIND OF URGENT

Hi Ladies:

I wanted to ask you a beauty lip question. I have an event I'm going to on Saturday and I didn't really notice this before, or it's gotten worse over time, but my upper lip on the right side is a lot bigger than the left side. What should I do???? I want to wear this luscious pretty deep red color, which would only accentuate the lopsidedness.

If you have lopsided lips, meaning one upper lip is higher than the other, do you go with the smaller side and copy it or do you go with the bigger side and go over the top to make it fuller like the other side?

I had a girlfriend with this problem, which was quite noticeable. She just followed her natural lip line and I couldn't take my eyes off of how crooked they were. I guess she thought no one would see them, but I did.

What should I do?

Thanks,

I went to get a gift certificate at a local salon last week and I saw they had lashes on the board.

So, yesterday I went to check them out, asked questions and thought I'd try them today.

They could be the same as the ones that are puchased at the beauty supply store, but I have some trouble with application on myself with those.

We'll see.

Azeeza

PS My eyelashes don't curl, they grow straight out like an elephant's eyelashes, so placement is important for where the curve has to be placed.

How do you get hair spray out of synthetic hair pieces?

Can you shampoo them?

Or should you gently brush the product out of them?

Did My Own Keratin Treatment

Last night I did my own keratin treatment. I have to wait three days before I can wash it.

Thus far, my hair looks really nice and smooth. I can't wear any hair clips, tuck the hair behind my ears or wear sunglasses (this one is going to be difficult for me).

One thing I noticed is that I can't really get a comb or hair brush through it with the keratin on it. It's a little sticky, but I hope that will go away after the first wash.

I had to change my whole system to a keratin shampoo and conditioner, but I hope this helps. My hair looked okay in the winter time, not the smoothest, but it got really curly and frizzy in the summer months.

It's my dad's hair texture, but at least I have hair to complain about, right?

Airbrush Machine

I bought an airbrush machine for my nails to cut down on the polishing time. I tried to use it last night, but it was a bust. The directions were non existent, but once I get it up and running I'll let you know.

One neat thing is that it can make fake henna and fake tattoos, which is cool in addition to artwork on vases and such, which doesn't fit in this board, but it can do things for nails too, which does fit in this board with body art.

Stay tuned.

Hair coloring question

My daughter (15) has been coloring her hair black with non-permanent hair color. She has done this about 5-6 times now. But now she wants to go back to close to her original brown with some subtle red tones. She picked out a *permanent* color she liked.

So I actually have TWO questions...

1) Can the permanent be applied over the non-permanent without too much damage?

2) Will the permanent BROWN be able to override the non-permanent BLACK?

Thanks so much for any and all info!
Skincare for super sensitive skin

I need help! My skin is obscenely sensitive. I used cetaphil moisturizer one day, had it on my skin for maybe a minute before I washed it off and still have a burn on my face for 3 days.

Ive been using desert ... something face wash from Trader joes with a little mini loofah scrubby (that and dr. bronners are fine for my skin) and coconut oil to moisturize. They are great, BUT... I want my skin to look better. Im 28, so Im BEGINNING to get some little eye wrinkles, my cheeks are easily prone to redness and theres just some unevenness to my skin tone that I would like to deal with. What can I do? What should I try? I don't wear makeup daily and don't want to. Makeup doesnt seem to bother my skin though, only some face washes and pretty much all commercial moisurizers. Also, I feel like if I dont use the face scrubby to wash every day, my skin feels rough. I know that 'they' say to exfoliate only 2x's a week, that just doesnt seem like enough for me!

Any suggestions?

What is your favorite, if you've tried it at home and what were your results?

What do you have to do for after care immediately after treatment and for long term care?

Is retin A or retinol recommened? If yes, is it prescription or OTC?

Bad reaction to coconut oil & other oils as moisturizers

After hearing/reading from many people how amazing moisturizing with oils/butters is, I tried multiple oils to try to find one that works for me (jojoba oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, grapeseed oil, coconut oil, vitamin E, apricot oil, & maybe others, I can't remember now) and I seem to have the same issue with all of them:

The first day or so is good, but then the backs of my hands get red, blotchy, and both the palms and the backs get extra dry, with rough patches. In the case of the most recent attempt with coconut oil, my hands were so bad last Friday that my skin was cracking and in pain (it was approx. the 3rd day of use and they went from normal to cracking over the course of one work day).

I have some thoughts as to what might be causing it, but would like some feedback/insight from those who have more experience with oils than me, because I have no idea if these make sense or not.

Some possibilities:

1. Mixing moisturizer types: I used the coconut oil at home, but I have Curel at work. I washed my hands a lot that day and so used lots of Curel. Perhaps the coconut oil and Curel combined caused a reaction?

2. Using too much coconut oil: The rest of my body (and I used the oil all over) didn't break out, just my hands. Since I use my hands to apply the oil, could they have gotten an overdose and caused a reaction? I know when I first tried out oils, I was using too much and had red blotches and dryness on other parts of my body. After I started using it more sparingly, it seemed to get better elsewhere, but I still have issues with my hands.

3. 2nd version of too much coconut oil: perhaps it's not that the oil caused the reaction itself, but maybe it worked too well and made the skin on my hands extra, extra soft. This might cause issues because I work with a lot of paper & put reports together, so if my skin was made too soft/delicate by the oil, it may have been hit extra hard by the drying/rough effects of the paper and toner I'm exposed to?

4. It was an extra cold day, so that may have exacerbated the issue, whatever it was.

Thanks for any help!
Organix Keratin Brazilian-type treatment?

I just noticed that Organix has come out with a DIY hair smoothing treatment that is supposed to leave your hair frizz-free for 30 days; the method sounds like a Brazilian Blowout and has to be flat ironed in and not washed for two days before it's good to go. It's every bit as labor intensive as a Brazilian Blowout, but costs $15 vs. $150-350 for the salon treatment.

I still have to look over the ingredients to see how they get around the formaldehyde issue, but I'm intrigued. Has anyone here tried it? I've read some online reviews, and they are overwhelmingly positive, although some blondes have complained that it leaves their hair with an orangey tint, but I have dark hair, so not really an issue.

Hello to all,

i wanted to post a topic here on hair treatment -products made outside the United States.

i for one love all hair products, as long as it smells good and its good for my hair.

Most of these hair product can't be found in CVs, Macy's, Walmart or whatever it is you buy your hair product.

Many of them are found in Urban city, beauty supply stores, where there's larger populations of Latinos in my cases.

I read topic of hair growth... I know I product called La Bomba (the bomb), it's from the Dominican Republic, it help hair growth, give your hair shine.

I was told by my mother there are many hair product made in Colombia, Brazil and Mexico... that are extremely good for your hair... that don't cost as much as this other hair product.

Food for thought.. if anyone every thought about trying one.. ot if anyone else would like to list ones they know... it would be great!

Crows Feet - What really works??

Okay, so I've seen old posts on crows feet, with suggestions for Renova and Tazorac as well as cod liver oil. I'm considering getting the Avon Anew Clinical. If that doesn't work, I'll try the Renova....

I'm DESPERATE!! I drink plenty of water. I don't smoke. I wear sunglasses. Things just keep getting worse. At this point, I'm alternating with Avon Anew Line Eliminator one night, then straight vitamin E the next night. Things are a bit better, but not great. I moisturize like crazy with Dr. Haushka and sometimes Murad Vitamin C undereye cream.

Does anyone know what really works????

I started using it and while i didn't have an extreme reaction that some folk's have (redness, irritation and burning), i've stopped it after less than a week because my skin is peeling and flaking off pretty badly. This wasn't exactly what i pictured for "exfoliation."

Anyone else have this kind of reaction? Is this normal?

Removing combs from a pony tail hair piece?

Hi Divas,

I have a pony tail that I love. It attaches via 2 combs (about 3 inches long EACH), one on each side, of my own pony tail (which I braid and pin up, because the pony is curly and my hair is straighter).

The combs HURT!

What I'd like to do is to remove those 2 huge combs, add 2 smaller combs (top and bottom) and a drawstring. I looked for some video tutorials on how to do this but came up empty. Any ideas? I can figure out how to attach 2 new smaller-sized combs, but the drawstring is what puzzles me.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!
Sanotint Hair Dye

I'm searching for a hair dye my sensitive skin may have a shot at tolerating. Henna is so drying, & like the natural color-enhancing Jason shampoo I use sometimes, doesn't cover the silver...

Want a black or-off black (my natural color) that covers gray. Came across one called Sanotint... www.sanotint.com.

Anyone here ever use this, especially anyone with sensitive skin/scalp? How did it go?

Getting over highlights

Hello all.... I've spent the morning reading through some of the past posts about home hair color, and I just need some reassurance.
The last time I had highlights done, my shoulder length hair began to break off and fall out. I think she left it on a little too long. I went back in to get it cut shorter (sniffle - it took me 2 years to grow it out from a pixie cut) and the stylist (my regular girl is out on maternity) cut layers in. Now my hair looks like total crap. Like straw - I think the layers accentuate the fried-ness.
My roots are growing in, and thought they aren't that bad (my hair is a medium ash blonde with really really light highlights), I can't afford/don't want to deal with the upkeep any more.
Is there a gentle hair color that you suggest to take me back to my roots, so to speak?
I'm leaning toward a demi-perm, but kind of afraid because when I've tried to do my own color at home, the color always faded very quickly. Even when I tried the permanent.
Advice?

is CoverGirl Lash Blast!!! I never thought in a million years I would find a mascara that I loved as much as L'oreal Voluminous, but I did. I have always despised CG mascara, but Lash Blast is awesome! i have it in regular black and the Luxe version (has sparkles) for brunettes. the brush is awesome, but be careful because it is stiffer than the normal brushes ( i poked my eyes a few times at the beginning). Right now is a great time to buy, too because most place (like target) have 2-packs for under &10.00.

www.skintactix.com

It kind of sounds like Proactiv but I was just wondering if anyone has heard of these products or knows anything about it. I've tried Proactiv and it did nothing for me. I've also been on accutane and it did help with the breakouts but my skin has returned to it's old oily self again. The only problems that I really have at this point are old acne marks (red spots), oily skin, and the occasional zit or two. If anyone can offer any advice as to getting rid of these problems it would be greatly appreciated.

I finally bought the "Curly Girl" book by Lorraine Massey...

Hi Divas,

I finally decided to order a copy of "Curly Girl" by Lorraine Massey. Many of you here have commented on some of the content of this book. I am a trained and licensed hair stylist so I'm no novice, but I thought, why not? I know curly hair does have different needs from my straight-but-tends-to-frizz hair. I bought it primarily to help me handle my daughter's hair (nearing age 12). I saw that there were some cutting tips in the book so I figured it can only help.

What surprised me is that her info applies to me too.

About 2 years after my daughter was born, I noticed that my hair, which was always pin-straight, had developed a wave, mostly in the back of my head. We recently went on vacation to San Diego, and there was 1 evening when we literally went from pool to dinner. I had just blotted my pool-wet hair, sprayed in a little conditioner and scrunched, and hoped for the best. When it dried, I saw these fabulous waves all over my head that I never knew I had.

Last night, I tried her "wavy" haired cleansing method... basically, massage some conditioner on the scalp only, rinse, then apply conditioner to the tresses and rinse. Bend over, blot (in a scrunching manner) with a towel and just sort of leave it alone. I had more waves than I ever thought possible.

I'm anxious to try some of her recipes... the Lavender Mist, Lemon Aid, and the Avocado Wrap. Has anyone tried any of these? Other ideas?

cellulite...oh no!!

Ok, so I went to Nordstroms to find some spanx to wear under a miniskirt. I tried them on first and nearly passed out when I got a glimpse of my butt in the dressing room mirror. Good Lord, I had no idea that my butt was so big and that I had so much cellulite!!! The salespeople kept telling me it was the bad lighting, but I'm not convinced....

So, I'm wondering, what does everyone do to keep the cellulite in check? I'm already doing the P90X workout program, but apparently it's not doing much for my glutes, or else maybe I need to rev it up.

I was reading about dry brushing in older posts of this tribe, but I've never tried it. I bought Nivea "goodbye cellulite", but I'm not sure if those other the counter creams really work. I always thought cellulite was something that had to be treated from the inside out...

Any thoughts?

If you have belly dance class tonight, there’s a 100 percent chance the teacher will ask you to smile. And if you are performing, there’s another 100 percent chance you will be smiling with your friends, your audience and the camera. Don’t let your happy moments, also be the embarrassing ones and show off your dazzling white teeth without having to spend hundreds of dollars on whitening procedures, instead follow some home remedies from belly dancers all over the world.

The tricks:

*Rub your teeth with the inner part of an orange peel.
*Rub your teeth with a cotton ball soaked in virgin olive oil.
*Rub your teeth with sage leafs (fresh ones).
*Rub your teeth with strawberry pulp mixed with baking soda for about 5 minutes.
*Burn a corn tortilla until it turns black and rub the charcoal in your teeth for about 5 minutes.
*Brush your teeth with apple cider vinegar before you go to sleep.
*Rub your teeth with a cotton ball soaked in mustard oil and a pinch of salt.
*Brush your teeth with turmeric powder and salt.

I wanted to share this with you because it's pretty amazing. My girlfriend has been using these weight loss lollypops for about 2 months and she has lost 15 inches in her waist! The have a patent on the ingredients (herbs/Hoodia/Citrimax) which means it has to be proven that it is 96% effective by independent clinical studies. I was so impressed...they taste good and they reduce your appetite & cravings! I've been using them for only a week and already my pants are starting to fit better!

Mascara, makeup removers, and castor oil

There's been a couple of threads on all of these and after reading them i finally got some castor oil yesterday. It's WAY more viscous than i imagined. Any tricks on applying other than a q-tip? And how often? How long before you start seeing results?

I don't have any mascara-remover so i just used the oil and it worked fine. I like the idea of not having to use a whole bunch of different products- anyone have a bad experience using it, or a remover they like better?

(Sorry this is a barrage of questions) Also, what's the big problem with not taking off waterproof mascara at night? I use nothing but waterproof and i'm pretty bad about remembering to take it off. I've noticed my lashes are thinner but i've always chalked it up to the aging process- until i read another thread recently that said something about it can thin your lashes.

Question about bumps around eyes

My neighbor and I were discussing what to do about these tiny bumps around our eyes. She had hers removed by a doctor a few years back. However, they have now resurfaced.

Do any of y'all know what causes them and how to get rid of them without seeing a doctor?

I was once told by a woman who sells Estee that they are caused by too much moisturizer. I read up on that and it seems that heavy moisturizers might be a problem but I never use anything but eye cream.

Any suggestions?

Finally repaired my damged hair :)

OK, I always had lots of hair, but it was always very fine and flat. And on top of that, even using the healthiest, lowest-chemical coloring dries it out.

I finally saw a party picture from July 2009 where my hair looked so bad, I thought it made me look sick. I can't afford to look sick. So I went on a hard-target search for something that might really work... I needed a reconstructor.

In the past, I usually turned to L'Oreal's Ineral Hair Repair, which you apply & leave in after a shampoo (but no conditioner.) But this time, I needed more structure.

I surfed around online, and first I found a salon treatment costing $200. It was a protein treatment you heat activated until it dried, then rinsed out. Further surfing brought the price down to about $40 as a do-it-yourself, at-home kit.

Bu then in some comments elsewhere about that product, a stylist said the product reminded him of a similar one he learned about in cosmetology school, form Aphogee. Some more homework online, and I narrowed it down to Aphogee's Two-Step Protein Treatment.

I stopped by my local beauty supply shop, and picked up 2, 1-ounce packets for $6 total. That was a major markdown from the $2000 salon or even the $40 at-home products. I followed the directions exactly, including following the Protein Treatment with a good conditioner - and wow!

First off, my hair felt great. After the first treatment, I got tons of volume, and my shedding went way down. My natural wave came back. The pro at the beauty supply suggested two treatments, about a month apart - the second treatment would give me the shine I wanted - and he was right!

I have since done a total of 3 treatments over the course of about 3 months - and my hair this time was blindingly shiny in a recent party photo! I sent my before & after pictures to folica.com's Aphogee review section / comments.

If you already have great, natural hair, you don't need this. And too much of this can dry out your hair. But if your hair is like the dry, stiff straw mine was - this stuff is a miracle!

Off-topic: What other tribes do you like?

I'm posting this to some of the busier tribes I'm in, or to tribes whose subject I particularly like and want to resurrect:

I apologize for ALL the crossposting I'm doing about this, I just want to get a sense of where the active people are, and maybe encourage a few people to join tribes they're not in already. I also want to learn about more tribes for me to join. I also think that it'll bring up some 'related tribes' about similar topics.

So:
what other tribes do you like?
What do you like about them?
what do you talk about?
How off-topic do you get?

what 'dead' tribes would you like to resurrect?
Do any of the dead tribes have new-member access problems (like a missing moderator and private or moderated status)? Either situation can usually be gotten around by having members give other members invites.

Would you be willing to invite people to this 'locked-down' tribe if the current moderator's AWOL?

How to give people invites to a tribe you're in that isn't public (short of replacing the current moderator, which can be done):

Visit the member's profile whom you'd like to invite
click 'see more' button that is right below their profile picture
Select 'invite to tribe' in order to send them invites.
You can now send them invites to three tribes (that you're a member of already) at once.

MAC liquidlast is thinning my lashes! Help!

I love MAC liquidlast eyeliner, but I've noticed that my eyelashes are so much thinner now than when I was using Dr. Hauschka eyeliner. I was considering just ditching eyeliner all together and getting my eyeliner tattooed then trying to rebuild my lashes.

MAC is just so harsh. Dr. Hauschka is so expensive. What can I do to save the last of my stubby thinning lashes?

Favorite primer for keeping eyeshadow in place?

Urban Decay always comes up, but there are others that get mentioned. What are the favorites and why?
Do we have anyone who's tried several?

I'm trying to keep each product separate after searching through the old posts for a couple hours and finding one mention of X here, a mention of Y there, and never found any comparison threads... I'm tired of ending up with a ton of stuff that kinda sorta works halfway, and I'm planning the big cash investment on the basics. I really appreciate the sharing of experience and wisdom.

Best Black Rinses?

Does anyone know of a really good black hair rinse. I mean GOTHIC BLACK. Maybe even blue black if its a true blue.

All of the darker ones that I find nowadays are actually purple which looks horrible w/ my skin. I tried Jazzing in "denim" once and it actually gave my hair a greenish tone. I used to use Garnier 100% color in blue black, but the last time that I tried it the formula was actually more purple.

Any advice on true black or at least a true blue black rinse?

Using conditioner instead of shave gel

I may have stumbled upon something great this past weekend. :)

I forgot to take my shave gel with me on a trip, so I used my hair conditioner instead. It worked great! My legs and bikini line were silky smooth afterwards, no razor burn, and I didn't have to use lotion after the shower because the conditioner already took care of them!

I think I may continue to do this in the future because it would save on cost (no more shaving gel & less lotion cost would equal less than added cost of conditioner). Plus, that's be one less bottle in the shower.

Has anyone else tried this? Are there any pitfalls I'm not aware of?

Non-antibacterial hand soap?

I think the alcohol in antibacterial hand soap is contributing to my hands being so dry all the time. Unfortunately, the grocery store only seems to carry the antibacterial variety. Any suggestions? Should I just start filling my hand soap container with body wash? Are there "green"/home-brewed alternatives?

This winter really did a number on my hands & I'd love to get them back to being the nice, soft hands I had before. :(

Diva friends,
I was surfing the 'net one day and found a site about cleansing your face with oil. The homemade recipe was olive oil and castor oil mixed together in a certain percentage for your type of skin. I've been so bummed and upset about my skin and getting older isn't helping matters at all! So I decided to mix a 70%/30% mix of olive oil and castor oil (more olive than castor) for oily skin and followed the directions to the hilt and low and behold.....my skin looks 1000% better and the best thing is that it's calmed down the redness in my rosacea skin! I absolutely couldn't believe it. No blackheads, no whiteheads, no milia, my bumps are going away slowly but I can tell they are not as big as they were and my skin looks so much better to me. I will have to find the link to pass this on, but if you google "oil cleansing method" it's either the first or second entry. I don't know if will work on everyone, but it sure worked for me. Mom was right, she always cleansed her face with this stuff that was oil based and she had great looking skin way into her early 90s before she became ill. I'm just one happy camper about my face!

The Grey Plan

I've colored my hair since my late teens, and it has always been a demi-permanent warm brown (or something in the dark auburn-to-burgundy range), usually with some kind of streaks, either sorta natural red-brown or a bright fuschia/cherry/purple tone.

Now, as I'm getting a fair amount of grey, that is no longer working- the base color isn't taking well on the depigmented strands the first time it's dyed, the red-brown looks weirdly pinkish, not in a good way; the new hair closest to the scalp looks funky but past the first 3/4" looks fine. It's time to change my game plan. I don't really want to switch to a permanent, as I'm afraid those will color everything the same, uniform shade and look flat. I've always done my own color, and would like to continue, but not sure how possible that will be.

So I thought I'd try something different and grow the color out and go with the salt & pepper that's there, plus some bleached streaks to make it more Cruella DeVil, which I could use some kind of lavender toner or brighter purple on. It's not like companies are rushing to cater to the aging ex-punk market. So here's my question to the experts out there. I know I'll have to do something with the warm-brown hair I'll be growing out and have to change to a cooler base shade. Can an ash shade be used over a warm brown without it going all muddy? Is there some trick to making the transition, like a filler, or a permanent color over the demi I've been using up to now? Should I just bite the bullet and go to a pro while it's growing?

In my quest to erase my dark under eye circles I just bought Benefit's Erase Paste and it is wonderful! The best that I have found!!
Also, while at Sephora- I really wanted the cult fav: Nars Orgasm blush. I love Nars and support them but 26.00 was just too much to pay. There is a knock-off at the drugstores called Milani in Luminous which I went and got and it is great! I don't know how it compares to the real thing but it gives your cheeks a pink golden hue that really looks like you may have just rolled out from under the covers!

Types of wax for different 'stuff' to be removed

I just went on a self-waxing spree (cheap entertainment, out on the farm). I'm using a cheap microwave wax kit of the Gigi's Honee variety, with an alcohol-based gel that removes oils first, but didn't have any powder (the kit recommended it) as I'd never seen a waxer use it. I had some trouble with it being too 'sticky' on armpits where it was sticking to my skin, was 'stretchy', and was hard to pull off in one piece. I have sparse body hair and I hadn't shaved or waxed my armpits in ages so it was relatively long hair with a lot of skin 'showing through' for the wax to attach to. It worked better on my shorter leg hair and just fine on eyebrows. most of the problem on the armpits seemed to be from the wax being hard to apply thin (I had it pretty hot) and getting 'stretchy' and not sticking everything together in one layer when the fabric was pulled on.

Also, I think this might be a 'sugaring' kit rather than wax, just based on the name.

I know that when I've gone to pro waxers, they used different waxes (and sugaring) for different types of hair. Any tips here on what works better for what kind of hair?

Do you have any tips for removing them? I know doctors tell us you can't, but there are people who've used Vicks vapor rub, exfoliating, Shea butter, blahdy blah. I would love to hear any testimonials if something has worked for you guys? I started vicks about a week ago and nothing so far. I'll wait a month and see. I have them all over my arms and my tummy. I don't mind the ones on the hips because I think those can be kind of hot in a womanly sort of way. Otherwise, this sucks ass. Any suggestions?

Extreme diet regimens and health/ skin hair

I have a lot of friends who spend a lot of time, energy, money, restricted socializing, etc on extreme diet regimens, such as vegan, raw, etc., excluding many foods as unpure, chronic use of 'cleanses', fasts, enemas, etc. It is foreost in their minds, conversations, and socializations, and may be argumentative or dismissive when challenged for proof.

As a former vegetarian, I found their explanations and lectures often lacking in critical thinking or real objective research and support, and I began to wonder what the extremism was really about. Plus I noticed that many of these people got sick more often, and for longer periods, than I did, and also broke bones more easily, and had underweight, skin, fertility, failure-to-thrive, and hair problems.

Finally, I ran across some articles on othorexia, where people exclude many food options based on purported impurity (often spiritual) and personal control, bordering on anxiety problems, anorexia, and OCD. They tend to associate with only other pure foodists, and condescend to people who eat differently than they do.

I am not saying that all health-conscious people fall into this category, but I bring it to your attention as an FYI, since there are new studies that suggest there is a growing subset of people with perfectionist, self-esteem, body image, and eating disorders who may fall into this category. And it seems to be a growing trend.

You can google for links, but here is a quiz -

http://www.skwigg.com/id8.html

There are also more academic and technical studies on this trend, which I leave to you to google...

Just FYI - peace.
Since I'm probably not the only one wanting wigs and falls and such but can't afford them. This chick does CosPlay, and it requires re-thinking for our uses, but she has step by step info on re-styling wigs, adding ponytails, curling, straightening, dying, etc. All those old beat up wigs at Goodwill are gonna get new life when I dye them wild colors and sew in extra hair!

Looking for an absolute black eyeliner that won't smudge off, rub/travel down around under my eyes so I look sick, won't flake off, etc. I want the look in that pic up there - http://comfydiva.tribe.net/photos/b57821f1-da7b-4187-9c14-4b51df518940. I also want the solid black eyeshadow coverage in that pic.
I'm looking at Ben Nye cake eyeliner, Majicakes Aqua Paints and maybe even the Majicolor Liquid Face Paint.
I would like to know what others prefer. Some people swear by Mac cake liner.

Right now, I have the 88 color palette, and I've tried it with a damp and wet brush, and it's ok, but it's not the solid black they have there, and it does smudge some.

They also have the Smashbox 6-pack of lipglosses for around $30. I got this last year for Xmas and they lasted all year long. Check them out!
FYI... JCPenny has Sephora in their stores now.

Stilletto Mascara...

I bought it. Tried it for a few days. Not impressed.

OK, so it does make lashes look pretty long, but I don't think very much longer than any other lengthening mascara (either 1 or 2 step). The package says to keep applying while it's still wet, don't allow it to dry in between. I don't know why. I applied it with more brush strokes than I normally would do, got a nice look, and then I *ALWAYS* go over it with a clean dry brush to smooth out any clumps. Looks good.... for a while.

My issue with this mascara is as they day went on, it flaked. Not smudged, but flaked. I didn't hit the gym, or dance, or apply any wetting drops (I wear contacts). At the end of a 12-hour day wearing this stuff, I looked at myself in the mirror and could see little bitty black flecks of fibers and such under my eye and even on the top of my cheek. This alone will keep me from buying this product again.

Maybe your mileage will vary and you'll have better results. I mean, it's drugstore so it's certainly easy on the budget so try it if you're curious, but I think I'd personally rather use Lash Exact (also Maybelline) or Voluminous (L'Oreal). I think both of these stay on better than the Stilletto mascara.

Just my 2 cents on the topic.

Review: Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller

Just bought this product this today. Not a bad price point at $13 or so, which most eye product buyers will tell you is below the average. I have noticeable bags under my eyes since middle school (read: 8 years) and enough discoloration that I hesitate to go out without at least a little concealer under my eyes. I decided to give this product a try, and...

LOVED IT. I've only had it for one day, only used it twice, and I already see an instant difference in discoloration. The box makes this claim, so it's good to see the product lives up to its advertisement. The skin under my eyes has brightened considerably, and the product is colorless, so it wasn't due to any inherent tint in the formula. From what I've read of reviews, it takes about a week to notice significant puffage decrease. At least two-thirds of the reviews I've read on the product found it effective, and because it's cheaper than the average eye care product, I feel it's worth the trial. It worked tremendously for me even just after a few uses, and I wanted to pass it along to those who might be looking for something similar.

Will probably comment the post in a week or so to give reviews about its anti-puff claims. Stay tuned.

Red lipstick report

Is it just me, or is great red lipstick hard to find?

I've been looking for a natural looking but true red lipstick forever. And I think I found one.

I'm a natural blonde, fair skin. Red lipsticks tend to turn hot pink on me. Brick brown lipsticks tend to be reddish. But I recently tried NYC Sheer Red and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It is matte, red and layerable...a little looks nicely natural, a lot looks nicely red. With clear lipgloss it really looks great...going out for the evening red! And, I bot it at Target for $0.94 !!

Another one, if you can find it is Watermelon Lipgloss by Mary Kay... a nice sweet glossy red, but red nonetheless.

I have a friend who has been taking a teaspoon of coconut oil twice a day for over-all well being.
Her skin is looking fierce and she says it's because of the coconut oil. Wondering if anyone has used it
with a similar outcome? Or, has anyone had any adverse reactions?

I purchased some, unrefined, organic, cold pressed (as recommended). Haven't delved into it yet.
how my skin finally got pretty

i'm 24, since i was 11 i have had acne and tons of blackheads. blackheads on my nose, my chin, some on my cheeks.. terrible.
i've tried proactive but it made my skin crack. i tried nuetrogena but it didnt do it either. i ued just cetaphil and rose water and it helped but i was still getting pimples and having alot of dry and oily spots everywhere.

then a friend suggested something she came across by accident. we're both lush fans, and i had tried their "dark angels" face cleanser, which was helping somewhat with my skin but it left it a bit dry and red.. she was trying "ocean salt" (another cleanser) and loved it.. and her fiance decided to get creative. he mixed ocean salt and dark angels together. it cleared up all his acne on his face, and all his "bacne"... so i gave it a try

what i am doing is preparing the dark angels as directed.. break off a small chunk, add water and mix into a paste.. then i add a finger full of ocean salt and mix them, then massage into dampened skin for 30 seconds to a minute, focusing on the parts with dryness, blackheads, pimples, etc (my whole stupid face). then i wipe it off with a warm, wet washcloth.. it leaves a residue with i wash off using a DIFFERENT facecloth and cetaphil. it removes the stuff you dont want, but leaves all the good stuff. after that i spritz my face with rose water and i'm all done. this is a nightly thing i do before bed, and in the morning i just do a water rinse and another spritz of rose water.

my skin has been nearly perfect for 2 straight weeks on this regime. i still wear concealer because i have some dark spots on my face from old breakouts, but once those clear up i may not have to wear any makeup at all. my pores are seeming to shrink (they appear to, anyway), my skin texture is evening out (it's all baby smooth now), and i havnt had a single zit.
i've never gone more than a few days without some sot of nastiness showing up.

this is downright amazing and i wanted to post it here so hopefully other people can benefit from it.

i have combination, sensitive skin. blackheads, pimples, large pores on my cheeks and nose... this might be too scrubby for people with delicate skin, so ask for little samples at the store before you commit to a whole jar of each product.

Natural sunblock?

Does anyone know of a natural alternative to sunblock? I'd really prefer to use something not so chemically-laden.

Also, every store-bought sunblock my sister has tried gives her a rash, so she would either like a natural one or one that is good for people who react to normal sunblock.

Thank you for any help! :)

Beauty-related and definitely dive-related.

So… I need to learn how to make my neck the star of photos taken of me, even when I have no control over when the photo is taken or from what angle.

I've lost about 30 pounds in the last 2 years, and quite a bit of face/jaw. But when I look at photos, I can't see my own weight loss (slimmer face) unless I see a decent amount of my own neck. (Other people may see things just fine, but until I can borrow their eyes…)

I have long hair, which I don't intend to cut. sometimes it's pulled back, sometimes it isn't. Are there any "tricks" to holding myself with a good view of neck, just in case there's a camera nearby?

Anyone using this?

http://www.smartskincare.com/tips/skincare_clean_20060416.html

I've been using it for a few days, and it's REALLY doing good things for my (acne-prone, combination) skin. It sounds freaky to wash your face with oil, but it really seems to work for a LOT of people!

(if you do a google search on it, you'll find a few long threads on it, one in particular from a "long hair community" that's 44 pages long and mostly positive results!)

BB Creams

Hi ladies! I wanted to see if any of you have heard of it and/or tried BB Cream(s). They have have been around in Asian markets for a while now; I've found some great reviews on them, here is a link to some info http://www.vivawoman.net/2007/09/14/bb-cream-the-new-rage-in-foundation/

There are so many different brands it's hard to know where to start. I ordered Skinfood's Aloe BB Cream today (should have it in a week or 2 since I had to order it online). This one has SPF 20, aloe, and is said to control oil pretty well. At ~20 bux/tube (which should last around 3 months) it seems like a good deal! Let's hope it works! =)

Do any of you know anything or have thoughts on BB creams?

Idea to share: Simple home-made toner

I'm not a huge fan of toners, mainly because of the sting and irritation of the alcohol. I found one that I had liked in a Hi Health store. It was basically made out of witch hazel and aloe vera. I ran out of it, so I thought... hmmm... why not?

I bought a bottle of plain witch hazel and a tube of aloe vera gel. I filled a small spray bottle with about 40% witch hazel and 60% aloe vera gel. Shake. I spray it on my hands and rub it all over. Sometimes I'll spray a cotton pad and use it like a traditional toner, swiping my face (even my lower eye lids to help remove traces of eyeliner that wasn't removed during washing). It doesn't ever sting, even on my eyelids. It's very refreshing.

Just thought I'd share.

Cleaning my Lunette/Diva Cup/Mooncup? (Menstrual cup)

I just got my Lunette in the mail yesterday! When I read the instructions, it said to wash with mild liquid soap but not hand soap because it "might cause infections."

What should I use to clean/disinfect it with? Why does it say no hand soap? I figure I wouldn't want to use anti-bacterial soap b/c I don't want to kill the good bacteria in there, but what about non-anti-bacterial hand soap? Are there natural cleansers I could use (maybe an oil?)

My initial thought for a cleansing routine is: boil it before 1st use of month, wash it daily during period, then boil it when period is over for month. Is that sufficient?

Thanks in advance for any help! ^_^

Lemon eucalyptus, pennyroyal, citronella, tea tree oil, thyme, rosemary, cedarwood, lemongrass (all are essential oils) and then ....yes...neem oil...but, you cannot smell it. You do have to reapply it more often than deet...but...well, price to pay.
I'm pretty sure everyone already knew about this...but, just in case. This came from the toner topic.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share this fantastic (cheap) mask which works really well for oily and acne prone skin.

I've struggled with acne for years now, and I've tried this egg mask only twice and already I've seen a drastic improvement in my skin. Literally, all you need is a separated egg. See the video below for more info:

Beauty suppliments....do they really work?

I have recently begun to notice the first signs of ageing, and decided to try out Perfectil Plus.... skin hair, and nail suppliments with the additional Nutri-Dermal Capsule.
I am only one month in to them, and haven't noticed any difference, my skin, and hair are still dry, and my nails are still weak, i did get them on 3 for 2 at Boots so will see the next two months through with them, but am wondering if i should have even bothered?

Would their traditional Pefectil have been just as good, or should i have splashed out a small fortune, and gone for their Perfectil Platinum?
I have also heard that Imeedeen is good, but pricey, which i wouldn't mind if they actually work.
Do any of you ladies use any beauty/vitamin suppliments, and how have you found them?
Any recommendations?

I know that a balanced diet is important, and better than using suppliments to get your intake, but what if you want an additional extra to boost your health, and for damage limitation with the ageing process

Has anyone used one of these before? They are basically like mini paint rollers, with micro-thin needles. The idea is that after "rolling" your skin will be able to absorb products better and deeper. So far I have only heard good reviews. Any other good results among beauty divas?

olive oil eye makeup remover problem

I wish i could find the post i'd pulled it off, but in one of the prior posts here people were talking about what eye makeup removers they preferred. Several women mentioned oil- olive oil and almond were mentioned repeatedly. I perked up because i wear waterproof mascara from time to time (complete with a raccoon look the next morning!) and i'd prefer to go with something natural and inexpensive.

Well, i've used it twice and both times it has stung the bajeezus out of my eyes. Of course i try not to get any in, but seriously- i'm removing stuff from my lashes, it's kinda hard not to. Has anyone else had this problem?

growing out bangs

I did a stupid thing and tried a different haircut only 2 months before my graduation. Yes- bangs. The stylist was a bit hesitant but did it, and i can't get mad at her since she was giving me the cut i wanted but now i'm not liking it and i'm not sure what to do with it before our big photo-op on May 15th.
I usually wear my hair layered around my face, and honestly my husband and most of my family say the new cut looks very flattering. My mom said it makes me look 10 yrs younger (which i'll take in a heartbeat!) but i've been pretty iffy about it all along. It's finally occurred to me that if after a month i'm still not sure if i like it then i probably don't!

My dilemma is what to do with it for graduation- it'll have been 2 months by the time it rolls around, but my hair grows slow and it's not looking like it'll be long enough to sweep aside and look good. On the other hand, it *will* be long enough to be in my eyes by then. So do i bite the bullet and trim it- winding up with pics of a cheesy style i'll be looking at for the next few decades on my office wall- or try and wrangle it in some new way?

Any advice? I'll post pics in the album of old and new if that helps. Thanks, Ladies!

Tinted moisturizer

Hi Divas,

Do you use tinted moisturizer? Which brand would you recommend?
I used one from Stila last year and even though I wasn't unhappy I'd like to try a different one for this summer. One that doesn't look oily but at the same time is not too matte with light to medium coverage. I keep hearing about Laura Mercier and Smashbox - have you tried their products? And what about Physician's Formula - has anyone tried their talc-free mineral tinted moisturizer?
Please help. Thank you.

I got my box of Frownies yesturday and wore it last night.

Basically, a frownie is a patch of stiff paper worn over a wrinkle. Smooth out the wrinkle with your fingers, put on the frownie so it stays smoothed out and wear overnight. Supposedly, the muscle under the skin will readjust over time to hold the skin smooth. They recommend you use a patch every day for at least 30 days to retrain the muscle. Interesting concept.

frownies.com

I wore it btw my eyebrows to get rid of the furrowed look. This morning that wrinkle was MUCH improved. However, after a full day of stressful work and eye squinting and dealing w/ a frustrating husband... will it come back?

One box of 144 patches was $20.

Wig cleaner? (x-posted)

I have several wigs and I know they make commercial wig cleaners, but instead of paying all the expense on a specialty product (& for the shipping) I was wondering if anyone had any cheap alternatives?

Perhaps liquid hand soap, dish soap, shampoo, or even a homemade soap? (I was thinking of mixing glycerin and water to make a mild soap & perhaps adding a drop or two of a natural oil like jojoba, for shine?)

Any other tips for keeping my wigs looking fabulous for as long as possible?

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment

Hello Divas,

Have you tried a brazilian keratin hair treatment? I have dry, curly, frizzy hair so I was thinking about this treatment. Apparently your hair will be transformed into silky smooth hair. I'd like to know if your hair will be super straight after this process or if there is a chance of keeping it wavy? I like my curls but I am fed up with the frizz. Please help and share your experience.

Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, at a time when Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news.

Earth Day 1970 turned that all around. On April 22, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

Now, the fight for a clean environment continues around the world with hundreds of millions of people in over 200 countries taking decisive action on clean energy.

Scandalous shadow base-better that primer potion?

Have you tried Scandalous shadow base? I keep hearing about it as it makes the shadow colors "pop" more than UD's primer potion. Here are 2 youtube comparisions of it..

www.youtube.com/watch

www.youtube.com/watch

I was planning to try this pot of shadow base...apparently it will work well on any skin tone (i have very dark olive skin) but i like to read more reviews of it first :) And thanks to a post on another board, I saw how much unused product can be in a funny-shaped bottle of Urban Decays primer potion (when you cut it in half), so i'd like to try an eyeshadow base with better packaging/ less wasted product).
