I have always despised CG mascara, but Lash Blast is awesome! i have it in regular black and the Luxe version (has sparkles) for brunettes. the brush is awesome, but be careful because it is stiffer than the normal brushes ( i poked my eyes a few times at the beginning). Right now is a great time to buy, too because most place (like target) have 2-packs for under &10.00.

I bought it. Tried it for a few days. Not impressed.

OK, so it does make lashes look pretty long, but I don't think very much longer than any other lengthening mascara (either 1 or 2 step). The package says to keep applying while it's still wet, don't allow it to dry in between. I don't know why. I applied it with more brush strokes than I normally would do, got a nice look, and then I *ALWAYS* go over it with a clean dry brush to smooth out any clumps. Looks good.... for a while.

My issue with this mascara is as they day went on, it flaked. Not smudged, but flaked. I didn't hit the gym, or dance, or apply any wetting drops (I wear contacts). At the end of a 12-hour day wearing this stuff, I looked at myself in the mirror and could see little bitty black flecks of fibers and such under my eye and even on the top of my cheek. This alone will keep me from buying this product again.

Maybe your mileage will vary and you'll have better results. I mean, it's drugstore so it's certainly easy on the budget so try it if you're curious, but I think I'd personally rather use Lash Exact (also Maybelline) or Voluminous (L'Oreal). I think both of these stay on better than the Stilletto mascara.

Just my 2 cents on the topic.

I have a lot of friends who spend a lot of time, energy, money, restricted socializing, etc on extreme diet regimens, such as vegan, raw, etc., excluding many foods as unpure, chronic use of 'cleanses', fasts, enemas, etc. It is foreost in their minds, conversations, and socializations, and may be argumentative or dismissive when challenged for proof.

As a former vegetarian, I found their explanations and lectures often lacking in critical thinking or real objective research and support, and I began to wonder what the extremism was really about. Plus I noticed that many of these people got sick more often, and for longer periods, than I did, and also broke bones more easily, and had underweight, skin, fertility, failure-to-thrive, and hair problems.

Finally, I ran across some articles on othorexia, where people exclude many food options based on purported impurity (often spiritual) and personal control, bordering on anxiety problems, anorexia, and OCD. They tend to associate with only other pure foodists, and condescend to people who eat differently than they do.

I am not saying that all health-conscious people fall into this category, but I bring it to your attention as an FYI, since there are new studies that suggest there is a growing subset of people with perfectionist, self-esteem, body image, and eating disorders who may fall into this category. And it seems to be a growing trend.

You can google for links, but here is a quiz -

http://www.skwigg.com/id8.html

There are also more academic and technical studies on this trend, which I leave to you to google...

Just FYI - peace.

Just bought this product this today. Not a bad price point at $13 or so, which most eye product buyers will tell you is below the average. I have noticeable bags under my eyes since middle school (read: 8 years) and enough discoloration that I hesitate to go out without at least a little concealer under my eyes. I decided to give this product a try, and...

LOVED IT. I've only had it for one day, only used it twice, and I already see an instant difference in discoloration. The box makes this claim, so it's good to see the product lives up to its advertisement. The skin under my eyes has brightened considerably, and the product is colorless, so it wasn't due to any inherent tint in the formula. From what I've read of reviews, it takes about a week to notice significant puffage decrease. At least two-thirds of the reviews I've read on the product found it effective, and because it's cheaper than the average eye care product, I feel it's worth the trial. It worked tremendously for me even just after a few uses, and I wanted to pass it along to those who might be looking for something similar.

Will probably comment the post in a week or so to give reviews about its anti-puff claims. Stay tuned.

Ive been using desert ... something face wash from Trader joes with a little mini loofah scrubby (that and dr. bronners are fine for my skin) and coconut oil to moisturize. They are great, BUT... I want my skin to look better. Im 28, so Im BEGINNING to get some little eye wrinkles, my cheeks are easily prone to redness and theres just some unevenness to my skin tone that I would like to deal with. What can I do? What should I try? I don't wear makeup daily and don't want to. Makeup doesnt seem to bother my skin though, only some face washes and pretty much all commercial moisurizers. Also, I feel like if I dont use the face scrubby to wash every day, my skin feels rough. I know that 'they' say to exfoliate only 2x's a week, that just doesnt seem like enough for me!

Any suggestions?

I'm a natural blonde, fair skin. Red lipsticks tend to turn hot pink on me. Brick brown lipsticks tend to be reddish. But I recently tried NYC Sheer Red and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. It is matte, red and layerable...a little looks nicely natural, a lot looks nicely red. With clear lipgloss it really looks great...going out for the evening red! And, I bot it at Target for $0.94 !!

Another one, if you can find it is Watermelon Lipgloss by Mary Kay... a nice sweet glossy red, but red nonetheless.

I've colored my hair since my late teens, and it has always been a demi-permanent warm brown (or something in the dark auburn-to-burgundy range), usually with some kind of streaks, either sorta natural red-brown or a bright fuschia/cherry/purple tone.

Now, as I'm getting a fair amount of grey, that is no longer working- the base color isn't taking well on the depigmented strands the first time it's dyed, the red-brown looks weirdly pinkish, not in a good way; the new hair closest to the scalp looks funky but past the first 3/4" looks fine. It's time to change my game plan. I don't really want to switch to a permanent, as I'm afraid those will color everything the same, uniform shade and look flat. I've always done my own color, and would like to continue, but not sure how possible that will be.

So I thought I'd try something different and grow the color out and go with the salt & pepper that's there, plus some bleached streaks to make it more Cruella DeVil, which I could use some kind of lavender toner or brighter purple on. It's not like companies are rushing to cater to the aging ex-punk market. So here's my question to the experts out there. I know I'll have to do something with the warm-brown hair I'll be growing out and have to change to a cooler base shade. Can an ash shade be used over a warm brown without it going all muddy? Is there some trick to making the transition, like a filler, or a permanent color over the demi I've been using up to now? Should I just bite the bullet and go to a pro while it's growing?

i've tried proactive but it made my skin crack. i tried nuetrogena but it didnt do it either. i ued just cetaphil and rose water and it helped but i was still getting pimples and having alot of dry and oily spots everywhere.

then a friend suggested something she came across by accident. we're both lush fans, and i had tried their "dark angels" face cleanser, which was helping somewhat with my skin but it left it a bit dry and red.. she was trying "ocean salt" (another cleanser) and loved it.. and her fiance decided to get creative. he mixed ocean salt and dark angels together. it cleared up all his acne on his face, and all his "bacne"... so i gave it a try

what i am doing is preparing the dark angels as directed.. break off a small chunk, add water and mix into a paste.. then i add a finger full of ocean salt and mix them, then massage into dampened skin for 30 seconds to a minute, focusing on the parts with dryness, blackheads, pimples, etc (my whole stupid face). then i wipe it off with a warm, wet washcloth.. it leaves a residue with i wash off using a DIFFERENT facecloth and cetaphil. it removes the stuff you dont want, but leaves all the good stuff. after that i spritz my face with rose water and i'm all done. this is a nightly thing i do before bed, and in the morning i just do a water rinse and another spritz of rose water.

my skin has been nearly perfect for 2 straight weeks on this regime. i still wear concealer because i have some dark spots on my face from old breakouts, but once those clear up i may not have to wear any makeup at all. my pores are seeming to shrink (they appear to, anyway), my skin texture is evening out (it's all baby smooth now), and i havnt had a single zit.
i've never gone more than a few days without some sot of nastiness showing up.

this is downright amazing and i wanted to post it here so hopefully other people can benefit from it.

i have combination, sensitive skin. blackheads, pimples, large pores on my cheeks and nose... this might be too scrubby for people with delicate skin, so ask for little samples at the store before you commit to a whole jar of each product.

I bought a bottle of plain witch hazel and a tube of aloe vera gel. I filled a small spray bottle with about 40% witch hazel and 60% aloe vera gel. Shake. I spray it on my hands and rub it all over. Sometimes I'll spray a cotton pad and use it like a traditional toner, swiping my face (even my lower eye lids to help remove traces of eyeliner that wasn't removed during washing). It doesn't ever sting, even on my eyelids. It's very refreshing.
I am only one month in to them, and haven't noticed any difference, my skin, and hair are still dry, and my nails are still weak, i did get them on 3 for 2 at Boots so will see the next two months through with them, but am wondering if i should have even bothered?

Would their traditional Pefectil have been just as good, or should i have splashed out a small fortune, and gone for their Perfectil Platinum?
I have also heard that Imeedeen is good, but pricey, which i wouldn't mind if they actually work.
Do any of you ladies use any beauty/vitamin suppliments, and how have you found them?
Any recommendations?

I know that a balanced diet is important, and better than using suppliments to get your intake, but what if you want an additional extra to boost your health, and for damage limitation with the ageing process

Several women mentioned oil- olive oil and almond were mentioned repeatedly. I perked up because i wear waterproof mascara from time to time (complete with a raccoon look the next morning!) and i'd prefer to go with something natural and inexpensive.

Well, i've used it twice and both times it has stung the bajeezus out of my eyes. Of course i try not to get any in, but seriously- i'm removing stuff from my lashes, it's kinda hard not to. Has anyone else had this problem?

The stylist was a bit hesitant but did it, and i can't get mad at her since she was giving me the cut i wanted but now i'm not liking it and i'm not sure what to do with it before our big photo-op on May 15th.
I usually wear my hair layered around my face, and honestly my husband and most of my family say the new cut looks very flattering. My mom said it makes me look 10 yrs younger (which i'll take in a heartbeat!) but i've been pretty iffy about it all along. It's finally occurred to me that if after a month i'm still not sure if i like it then i probably don't!

My dilemma is what to do with it for graduation- it'll have been 2 months by the time it rolls around, but my hair grows slow and it's not looking like it'll be long enough to sweep aside and look good. On the other hand, it *will* be long enough to be in my eyes by then. So do i bite the bullet and trim it- winding up with pics of a cheesy style i'll be looking at for the next few decades on my office wall- or try and wrangle it in some new way?

Any advice? I'll post pics in the album of old and new if that helps. Thanks, Ladies!

Earth Day was founded on April 22, 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson, at a time when Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. Environment was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news.

Earth Day 1970 turned that all around. On April 22, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment. Denis Hayes, the national coordinator, and his youthful staff organized massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

Now, the fight for a clean environment continues around the world with hundreds of millions of people in over 200 countries taking decisive action on clean energy.

I was planning to try this pot of shadow base...apparently it will work well on any skin tone (i have very dark olive skin) but i like to read more reviews of it first :) And thanks to a post on another board, I saw how much unused product can be in a funny-shaped bottle of Urban Decays primer potion (when you cut it in half), so i'd like to try an eyeshadow base with better packaging/ less wasted product).

Last week I switched to the oil cleanse method for my face (going well so far!) and this week I started using jojoba oil as a moisturizer for my body (not on my face).

But, oddly, since I started using jojoba, my hands have gotten really dry. o_O The skin feels papery. Am I using too much? Too little? Should it not be used by itself? Is it more like castor oil (drying type) instead of olive oil (moisturizing type)? Is it possible I just got a “bad” batch of jojoba oil? The descriptions I’ve read all say it’s odorless, but there is a slight smell to mine; however, I do have a sensitive nose. Vodka is supposedly odorless as well and I can smell that.

I’m thinking about switching oil types. I think some of you have recommended coconut oil, sunflower oil, or grapeseed oil. Any comments/suggestions? Are some better for oily, dry, or combination skin?

Also, what about butters like shea and cocoa? My impression from the test jars at the store is that cocoa butter is thicker and a more intense moisturizer than shea butter. Is this correct? Do you use an oil for general moisturizing and a butter for spots that need extra attention?

And what about lips? I currently use M.A.C. lip conditioner every night and was thinking about switching to shea or cocoa butter. Has anyone done this? Any recommendations?

with a cotton ball several timesa day - leave on

I am sure that it is the LP3 salivary enzymes (Lactoperoxidase, Lactoferrin and Lysozymewhich)
which are doing the bacteria killing but the expediency with which it prevents and/or eliminates acne
is most awesome.

Also, I have found that it was able to shorten the life span of the hormonal chin eruption, of which I get one every four
or five months. Typically it will appear (in almost the same spot every time) the week prior to the start of my cycle
and go through the cycle, taking a week to reduce and heal. Last month I applied Biotene immediately and by
theday before I started my cycle, it had receded completely.

They complained that their hair got deteriorated really badly, and started falling out a lot.

That really freaked me out, especially since my hair is super-fragile, and I have never used chemical dyes on it, precisely because of that.
But the two times I used henna weren't very satisfying...the color wasn't even, faded away relatively fast, plus all the mess of dying it-nearly blocked the toilet with all the bits of twigs and leaves that I washed out of my hair.
Then, there was the fact that my hair lost its shine.

And now I'm dreaming of glistening, intensely dark hair. But am scared that it will deteriorate even more.

Plus, I heard that once you use henna-especially black henna-to dye your hair, chemical dyes won't stick to your hair anymore, or that it may cause allergies to form. Not sure for how long this effect lasts.
It's been over a month since I last dyed my hair with henna, and I'm itching to use some chemical dye now, but don't wanna get any allergic reactions or anything.

Have you had any experiences with this?

Over time, I had developed one bad habit that I think was the cause of my mild-to-sometimes-moderate breakout issues. No, not sleeping with makeup on (I *never* do that...seriously!). I had become a....

.... speedwasher!

Yes. A speedwasher. With time being at such an incredible premium, I used to wash my face in 10 seconds or less. As quickly as possible so I could get to bed, start getting ready for work, whatever. I would wash my face as fast as humanly possible.

So, last November, I made a conscious effort to slow down....literally. I wash my face for a FULL 60 seconds at a minimum. I don't use anything abrasive, nothing more than a baby washcloth at night and a piece of a Handi Wipe in the morning. I usually use an Olay cleanser in the evening (to help get off makeup and waterproof sunscreen) and then CVS's version of Cetaphil (generic is the same thing) in the morning.

I haven't had a single skin eruption in over 3 months!!! I am still amazed. I've been wanting to post this for a while but I decided to let a full 3 months go by before I did. Didn't want to jinx myself <shudder> or state anything prematurely.

I do believe this is what the cause has been of my own skin issues for all these years. I just wasn't washing long enough for the cleanser to do it's job...clean my skin.

If you're having skin issues, try washing longer. Don't necessarily change what you're using, just use it longer. It worked for me!

******************

Lash Wars: A Behind-the-scenes Expose (from Paula Begoun, Beauty Bulletin)

Eyelash growth-enhancing products are being sold by a small but growing number of cosmetics companies. These types of products to one degree or another have been around for some time without much success. The success ratio changed when Jan Marini’s launched Age Intervention Eyelash, which contained an ingredient the company merely referred to as “eyelash growth factor.” There is no such thing as eyelash growth factor so that made-up marketing term was meaningless.

But who cared what they called it, because after a few weeks this product worked, and I mean really worked. My lashes actually became amazingly, almost preposterously long and darker. Applying mascara made it almost look like I was wearing false eyelashes which, to me, was astonishing. Every woman t in my office who was using it also experiencing the same thing. A cosmetic product that really worked (and worked fast) doesn’t happen every day or even a few times per year.

It turned out the mysterious eyelash growth factor was something the FDA did care about because the ingredient causing the lashes to grow within a few weeks was the glaucoma drug bimatoprost. Marini was using this prescription-only drug without following regulations.
As a result of FDA pressure Marini slightly renamed the product Age Intervention Eyelash Conditioner and listed the lash-growing ingredient on the label with its ridiculously long chemical name of 7-(3, 5-dihydroxy-2-(3-hydroxy-4-(3-(triflormethyl) phenoxy)-1-butenyl) cyclopentyl), N-ethyl, )1R-(alpha(Z), 2beta (1E,3R), 3alpha, 5alpha)). No wonder she wanted to leave that off the label!

This nearly indecipherable ingredient is similar to a class of ingredients known as prostaglandin analogues. These drugs, including latanoprost, bimatoprost (the drug present in Marini’s original formula), and travoprost, are used in eye drops to treat eye health problems such as glaucoma or ocular hypertension. One of the common side-effects of using these prescription-only eye drops is that eyelashes grow, darken, and become thicker. Adapting this to a cosmetic made sense, so Marini stuck it in a tube with a thin brush to be applied once a day similar to how you would apply liquid eye liner. It was flying off the shelves in no time, and quickly became a celebrity favorite.

The “active” ingredient listed above is, according to Marini, a customized analogue her lab had created and therefore was not a drug. Therefore, she was not in any trouble with the FDA for using a prescription drug in a cosmetic product. At least that’s what Marini and her staff were telling the public and estheticians retailing the brand. Behind the scenes, the company was embroiled in a battle with Allergan, a pharmaceutical company that holds a patent for using bimatoprost in their own lash-enhancing product. Allergan was also spending lots of money getting it approved through the proper channels for a new drug application with the FDA. Its new drug status? Growing longer, darker, thicker eyelashes, of course! On the other hand, Marini was attempting to get around Allergan’s patent and the FDA at the same time with what she claimed was a proprietary formula. It didn’t work.

Patent infringement and FDA regulations aren’t something to sneeze at. In late 2007 the FDA seized over 12,600 tubes of Age Intervention Eyelash (the original formula) and sales were stopped. The FDA accused Marini of using a drug (bimatoprost) and misbranding it, which she was. So what was the danger? If a woman using Age Intervention Eyelash containing a form of this glaucoma medication and they are already using glaucoma eye drops to treat the disease she could be at increased risk for optic nerve damage and eye inflammation, both of which can have serious consequences, including blindness.

Given most of the public didn’t know what was going on and the product had already gained a strong following, Marini made the prudent marketing decision to reformulate and renamed the next version of her lash-enhancing product Marini Lash. This version does not contain bimatoprost or anything else even remotely similar. Instead, it now contains peptides that Marini claims works better than the previous version. Yet there is no research anywhere proving any peptide can grow longer, thicker, or darker eyelashes so it is NOT a lash-enhancing product I can recommend. And I have to wonder if Marini Lash would’ve ever seen the light of day if the FDA and Allergan hadn’t disrupted the runaway success of the original Age Intervention Eyelash product and its successor.

What happens now with Allergan’s patent and FDA approval? Allergan is getting ready to enjoy unprecedented success with the launch of their eyelash-growing product, which they’ve named Latisse. Latisse’s active ingredient is 0.03% bimatoprost, and it will come in a brush-on formula to be applied to the lash line, just like Marini’s original lash product.

A major difference between Marini’s former Age Intervention Lash products (as well as those from other brands selling the same thing and more on that in a moment) is that because Latisse is classified as a drug, it is available by prescription only. Not only will this require a trip to or consultation with your physician, but the cost is considerable: $120 for a one-month supply. Marini’s former lash products weren’t cheap either at $160 per tube, but at least they lasted several months with once-per-day usage.

There is every reason to believe that Latisse will have a noticeable impact on the length, color, and thickness of your eyelashes. However, there are still side effects to consider such as a stinging sensation on skin where Latisse is applied, potential skin discoloration, and a permanent change in pigmentation of the iris (the colored part of the eye). Incidences of such side effects are low, but, as with any drug, you need to discuss the pros and cons with your prescribing physician or pharmacist. By the way, these same side effects were potential with the Marini product, she just didn’t tell anyone. If anything, she went on and on about how safe her product was.

One question I’ve pondered since Allergan and Marini were at odds with each other is why Allergan (and the FDA, for that matter) only went after Marini for using a glaucoma drug off-label? Several other companies are selling products with the same drug or with another type of prostaglandin analogue. They include Peter Thomas Roth Lashes to Die For, MD Lash Factor, Revitalash, Lilash, and Neulash. As of this writing, all of these products are available, all are expensive, and none have been seized by the FDA or called into question by Allergan. In any event, it continues to bother me. Why should Marini take all the financial loss while other companies continue to enjoy success selling lash enhancement products that work because, surprise, they contain prostaglandin analogues? If the FDA and Allergan wanted to make an example of Marini, then mission accomplished. But to be fair, they should’ve endeavored to make an example of any company selling this type of product. As Latisse launches with its success a foregone conclusion, perhaps they will.

Her afternoons are full, she is full in the mornings as well (she has always accommated me in the past) so I went to her yesterday and she barely even talked to me (she's a talker) and just did her job and never asked me when I wanted to schedule my next appointment, so I thanked her and left. My question is if hairdressers or nail tech all of a sudden don't have time for you or don't talk to you or whatever, is this a sign that I should move on to someone else?
1. Put toothpaste on your pimple before you go to bed, should help reduce swelling overnight. Make sure it is the paste not the gel. Any brand should do.

2. Dab egg white on your pimple and leave on for at least 20 minutes preferably overnight, this is supposed to "Suck Out" the "Nasty Stuff"

3. Wash your face twice a day in warm salty water. This should leave your face oil free without aggravating the acne like soap.

4. Ice down the acne before bed, by morning it should be noticeably better. Works best on larger pimples that have not yet formed a head. Because it is a method of reducing the swelling and helping the acne "re-absorb" it should prevent scarring.

5. First wash face and then dab acne with cotton balls soaked in vinegar.

It is putting 15 years on my face and I'm often accused of partying all night. So, besides h2o, rest, over the counter wrinkle cream what can I use to help? I am asking make-up brands and tricks. I've been using dermablend: http://www.dermablend.com/index.aspx

From Paula Begoun's Cosmeticscop.com e-mail newsletter:

************************************************************************

Vitamin K: The Dark Circle Connection

Next to wrinkles and acne, having dark circles under the eyes is a huge concern for my readers. Those struggling with dark circles are willing to try almost anything to get rid of them. As a result of this desperation, they're easy targets for any cosmetic company that claim to banish undereye darkness. Among the many eye-area products aimed at those with dark circles, several contain Vitamin K. What's the connection between this lesser-known vitamin and dark circles?

Vitamin K, technically known as phytonadione, is a fat-soluble vitamin manufactured in the liver that is necessary to ensure proper blood clotting. Its relation to the circulatory system has been parlayed into its use as a cosmetic ingredient to help diminish vascular conditions that emerge as skin imperfections such as dark circles under the eyes, redness from rosacea, and broken capillaries (including spider veins, also known as telangiectasia). It is important to note that vitamin K in skin-care products is considered a cosmetic ingredient, not a pharmaceutical or drug. Therefore, cosmetics companies are not required to prove their claims about what they say it can do for skin.

A typical claim for vitamin K, when applied topically, is that it can improve the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. A study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (April 2004, page 73) examined the effect of applying a gel containing 2% vitamin K plus 0.1% retinol, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Fifty-seven adults with dark circles participated in this 8-week study and the results, while not a slam-dunk, weren't exactly discouraging either: 47% of the testers noted "fair to moderate" improvement in their dark circles. The majority of testers noticed no change, but the treatment was well-tolerated. As encouraging as this seems whether or not the results were from the vitamin K or the other vitamins is unknown. It also doesn't explain if the results were due to the impact of the antioxidants on skin or vitamin K' s effect on circulation when taken orally.

A smaller-scale study showed that topical application of a cream with at least 1% vitamin K (other strengths were used too) shortened the amount of time that skin is reddish-purple after a pulsed dye laser treatment. This indicated that when used in appropriate amounts, vitamin K exerts an anti-inflammatory effect on skin (Source: Dermatologic Surgery, December 1999, page 942). Again, it would have been more intriguing if this study examined other topical agents as a means to reduce post-laser discoloration. Since the study only included vitamin K, we don't know if a topical vitamin C product would have had similar benefits, not to mention green tea, alpha lipoic acid, superoxide dismutase, licorice extract, or curcumin (all well-documented topical anti-inflammatory agents). In the larger study mentioned above, I'm curious as to what the results would have been if the vitamin K gel was used under one eye and another cosmeceutical-type ingredient was used on the other.

Although not a breakthrough, there is no denying some effectiveness was found—but you have to find a product with a potentially effective amount of vitamin K. Almost no cosmetic companies are selling products with vitamin K near the amounts used in these studies. If you’re curious to try a topical product with more than a dusting of vitamin K, consider Donnel Super Skin K-Derm Cream ($44.95 for 2.5 ounces; a gel version is also available but appears to contain less vitamin K than the Cream). Keep in mind that the studies did not look at vitamin K alone, but if you were curious if a good amount of vitamin K could make a difference, this product at least includes enough to prove that conjecture decidedly for yourself.

What is truly lacking is any research concerning vitamin K' effectiveness when used topically, at least in terms of affecting surface capillaries. According to Dr. Craig Feied, MD, director of the American Vein Institute and Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University, vitamin K is associated with veins and blood because it is a factor in the blood's ability to clot. Blood clots can choke off the blood flow through a vein or capillary and make it disappear. However, applying vitamin K to the surface of the skin won't make spider veins disappear, or even fade significantly. If vitamin K could penetrate the skin to affect the blood flow in spider veins, it could also affect the blood flow in healthy veins. If you're considering a vitamin K product for the reasons mentioned above, this is not cause for alarm. In order for vitamin K to form blood clots you need to take large doses that are metabolized in the liver, where proteins are formed. These special proteins are what cause the blood to clot, and aren't related to topical application of vitamin K. Be aware that sunburns, heat, pressure on the face, injury, smoking, or repeated irritation or inflammation from irritating skin-care ingredients can increase the occurrence of spider veins. Avoid these and you can reduce the appearance of these veins, as well as their formation. The best treatment option for spider veins remains non-ablative lasers such as the Intense Pulsed Light system (Sources: Dermatologic Surgery, October 2005, pages 1,285-1,289; and British Journal of Plastic Surgery, October 2005, pages 981-987).

*************************

Toxins: Purging the Myths by Detoxing the Scam

A reporter from US News and World Report called me for an interview about toxins and how or if skin-care products could purge them from skin. I appreciated how this reporter framed her question; she asked if it was possible. Many reporters have bought into myths just like anyone else and start asking a question assuming something is true when it isn't, not even a little. I was more than happy to have another opportunity to set the record straight on this overused, bogus term.

Much like any myth, if you hear or read about it often enough it becomes fact in the mind of many consumers. Once that happens they are eager to seek out the benefits of what amounts to little more than snake oil. Purging toxins from the body and skin is equal to the perceived need to drink lots of water (and often too much water) to keep skin hydrated. Neither is based on fact. And this isn't a conspiracy of the medical world. Just like the medical world discourages people from smoking and over-eating, or it encourages exercise and other beneficial behavior in the most direct campaigning possible (with solid research and studies of why you should follow their advice), so it’s no surprise the medical field hasn’t jumped with agreement on the “let’s purge toxins” bandwagon. If purging toxins from your body could help then physicians would be at the forefront of getting the information out to you (as soon as it was shown to be true). But truth doesn’t always sell products. Oftentimes you’ll get more people’s attention and dollars by promoting fiction-based fear instead.

When it comes to fiction, snake oil salespeople are supreme at quick fixes and euphoria. I love the drink more water example, because if your water intake is greater then what your body needs all you do is go to the bathroom more. Nothing in your body changes, it doesn't change the status of "toxins" in your body or how dry your skin is. Kids who don't drink enough water don't have dry skin because of it. Dry skin for most adults is the result of sun damage, genetics, health issues, certain medications, and their environment, not water intake. Believe me, I wish alleviating dry skin was as easy as increasing water intake!

In terms of skin and the purging of toxins we move into the absurd. At least with routine (not excessive) water intake it helps to stay hydrated and not be thirsty. When it comes to purging toxins from the skin there isn't a shred of evidence it is even possible, let alone helpful. Yet somehow sucking toxins out of your pores or between skin cells has become a basic part of many women’s attempt to achieve flawless skin. As a result of this flawed belief, detoxifying skin as sold by the cosmetics industry or earnest spa attendants and estheticians and the vitamin/herbal supplement world has become a sizable business.

And exactly what is a toxin? Consult the dictionary and toxin is defined as any poison. So what poison is lurking in your skin needing removal? Again, there is no answer from anyone in any corner of the alternative cosmetic or herbal world. What you may hear are more general, vague terms such as bacteria, airborne pollutant particulates from cars and city life, bad fats (this is a big lie in cellulite treatments), faulty lymph systems that build up who knows what, even fast food and secondhand smoke requires purging in this part of the cosmetic industry. Listening to all of this is enough to make some people want to live in a sterilized, airtight bubble for the sake of whole body purity, but there’s no need to take such a drastic step.

What isn't ever explained is exactly what is being eliminated when so-called toxins are being purged? No one has measured how much of whatever stuff is supposedly being removed during the process of cleansing. The reason that no one is doing such testing is because consumers don’t need facts to make decisions about their skin, so we end up with a big myth that is good for business but not you.

Without ever doing even basic testing, the people selling these detoxifying skin-care products or treatments leave it up to their imagination and they are adept at creating imaginary, unspecified toxins that are causing wrinkles, open pores, oily skin—you name the skin care complaint—and purging the skin is supposed to help. That expensive spa treatment wrapping your body in herbs, salts, fragrant oils, clay, or minerals might feel good and for a short time make your skin feel smooth, but in reality no skin condition has changed: your wrinkles haven’t gone away, your cellulite is still there, your pores haven’t changed, yet your pocketbook is lighter (now that’s what I call purging).

Many of these products claiming to detox the system, at least as far as the cosmetics industry and spa world is concerned, are fairly benign and do little, if any, harm. Overheating the body with saunas, Jacuzzis, and facial steaming can cause more problems than they help by damaging the skin’s ability to hold moisture, causing capillaries to surface, and increasing oil production. Putting fragranced salts into your bath can irritate the vaginal skin lining. Not good news but not terrible. Mostly it is just a waste of money and following myths isn’t a recipe for good skin care.

What has me concerned is some research I saw on really dangerous snake oil treatments as reported on a blog/podcast site at http://skeptoid.com, which had several posts written by Brian Dunning, a computer scientist who debunks pseudoscience reports as a hobby (I confirmed that the content is accurate and all quoted material below is from the author’s blog)

Mucoid plaque is supposedly a toxin naturopaths and herbal charlatans say everyone has growing inside their bowels; in fact they are created by the pill sold to purge them. In other words, the supposed cure is causing the problem making people assume the malady is real.

What you get to cure mucoid plaque is “…a bowel cleansing pill, said to be herbal, which causes your intestines to produce long, rubbery, hideous looking snakes of bowel movements, which they call mucoid plaque. There are lots of pictures of these on the Internet, and sites that sell these pills are a great place to find them. Look at www.DrNatura.com, www.BlessedHerbs.com, and www.AriseAndShine.com, just for a start.”

“Imagine how terrifying it would be to actually see one of those come out of your body. If you did, it would sure seem to confirm everything these web sites have warned about toxins building up in your intestines. But there's more to it. As it turns out, any professional con artist would be thoroughly impressed to learn the secrets of mucoid plaque (and, incidentally, the term mucoid plaque was invented by these sellers; there is no such actual medical condition). These pills consist mainly of bentonite, an absorbent, expanding clay similar to what composes many types of kitty litter. Combined with psyllium, used in the production of mucilage polymer, bentonite forms a rubbery cast of your intestines when taken internally, mixed of course with whatever else your body is excreting. Surprise, a giant rubbery snake of toxins in your toilet.”

“It's important to note that the only recorded instances of these "mucoid plaque" snakes in all of medical history come from the toilets of the victims of these cleansing pills. No gastroenterologist has ever encountered one in tens of millions of endoscopies, and no pathologist has ever found one during an autopsy. They do not exist until you take such a pill to form them. The pill creates the very condition that it claims to cure. And the results are so graphic and impressive that no victim would ever think to argue with the claim.”

Another detoxing gimmick I came across is from the electrical foot bath products on the market. “The idea is that you stick your feet in the bath of salt water, usually with some herbal or homeopathic additive, plug it in and switch it on, and soak your feet. After a while the water turns a sickly brown, and this is claimed to be the toxins that have been drawn out of your body through your feet. One tester found that his water turned brown even when he did not put his feet in. The reason is that electrodes in the water corrode via electrolysis, putting enough oxidized iron into the water to turn it brown. When reporter Ben Goldacre published these results in the Guardian Unlimited online news, some of the marketers of these products actually changed their messaging to admit this was happening — but again, staying one step ahead — now claim that their product is not about detoxification, it's about balancing the body's energy fields: Another meaningless, untestable claim.”

“But detoxifying through the feet didn't end there. A newcomer to the detoxification market is Kinoki foot pads, available at BuyKinoki.com and many drugstores. These are adhesive gauze patches that you stick to the sole of your foot at night, and they claim to ‘draw toxins’ from your body. They also claim that all Japanese people have perfect health, and the reason is that they use Kinoki foot pads to detoxify their bodies, a secret they've been jealously guarding from medical science for hundreds of years. A foolish claim like this is demonstrably false on every level, and should raise a huge red flag to any critical reader. Nowhere in any of their marketing materials do they say what these alleged toxins are, or what mechanism might cause them to move from your body into the adhesive pad.”

“Kinoki foot pads contain unpublished amounts of vinegar, tourmaline, chitin, and other unspecified ingredients. Tourmaline is a semi-precious gemstone that's inert and not biologically reactive, so it has no plausible function. Chitin is a type of polymer used in gauze bandages and medical sutures, so naturally it's part of any gauze product. They probably mention it because some alternative practitioners believe that chitin is a ‘fat attractor’, a pseudoscientific claim which has never been supported by any evidence or plausible hypothesis. I guess they hope that we will infer by extension that chitin also attracts ‘toxins’ out of the body. Basically the Kinoki foot pads are gauze bandages with vinegar. Vinegar has many folk-wisdom uses when applied topically, such as treating acne, sunburn, warts, dandruff, and as a folk antibiotic. But one should use caution: Vinegar can cause chemical burns on infants, and the American Dietetic Association has tracked cases of home vinegar applications to the foot causing deep skin ulcers after only two hours.”

“Since the Kinoki foot pads are self-adhesive, peeling them away removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells. And since they are moist, they loosen additional dead cells when left on for a while. So it's a given that the pads will look brown when peeled from your foot, exactly like any adhesive tape would; though this effect is much less dramatic than depicted on the TV commercials, depending on how dirty your feet are. And, as they predict, this color will diminish over subsequent applications, as fewer and fewer of your dead, dirty skin cells remain. There is no magic detoxification needed to explain this effect.”

What remains indisputably true is that the country of Japan is not selling these toxin-purging foot pads like hotcakes, everyone is not using them, and the Japanese have health problems like any population.

I’ll end this article by coming full circle back to skin care. Trying to eliminate wrinkles and other skin woes with false hopes that involve throwing your money down the toilet on products that can’t help doesn’t really make sense. When there are brilliant things you can do your skin, wasting money isn’t the way to go. Purging yourself of the myths the industry loves instigating and perpetuating and learning what you really should do instead is the best way to take care of your skin.

Seriously, I've spent tons on expensive body scrubs from all the prestigious cosmetic companies, only to feel like a total sucker after trying this!

I heard about it on a youtube video a few months ago, but only tried it this week, after running out of my last body scrub.

The original recipe used grape seed oil, but I decided to use olive oil, simply because it was at hand. And I honestly don't see how grape seed oil could've made my skin look even smoother than it got!

So here it is, with olive oil instead of grape seed oil: mix approx. half a cup of Epsom salt, half a cup of organic honey, and a little under half a cup of olive oil-doesn't have to be too precise, but I say don't put too much oil, because the salt and honey just stick together and the oil floats on top, so the oil is basically just to massage on your skin while you're scrubbing.
It smells deliciously sweet and olive oil feels great on the skin.

I washed with shower gel before and after the scrub, but I think it would be ok if you just left the olive oil on afterward and dab the skin gently with a towel, to dry off the water.
Olive oil gets into the skin and makes it softer than any body lotion could. But it depends on how easily you take feeling "oily" till morning(assuming you do this before going to bed).
However, even if you wash afterward, you won't be able to get it all out of your skin. I know I didn't. And my skin felt amazing the next day.

Anyway, it's the best! Trust me.

I am open to sugar instead of salt (not sure what the benefits are of one vs the other), and whatever natural oils will do the job. The one I used to buy had grapefruit oil to scent it, but if you ladies have come across any other desirable scent combos, I'd like to hear your recommendations.

Trouble is, after forking out the cash to buy this spendy RX, and using it a couple weeks, I didn't notice a damn difference. I've barely used any of thie large tube and am wondering if anyone wants it..?? I hate for it to go to waste in case it might work on someone else..Since sites like Craigslist forbid one from giving away/selling prescriptions, I thought I'd ask fellow tribemates instead. It just seems a shame to let this expensive prescription go to waste when it might help someone else. Let me know, I'd be glad to ship it to anyone who wants it. Oh yeah, my dermatologist said that it won't take away redness (broken capilliaries) but is supposed to target the small pimples one usually gets with this condition.~Michelle

Would it look blotchy since one is a powder and the other has a creamy consitency. I would love to get the Nars Multiple but am not sure if it will work with the mineral makeup. Please help!
