Coconut Oil

I have a friend who has been taking a teaspoon of coconut oil twice a day for over-all well being.
Her skin is looking fierce and she says it's because of the coconut oil. Wondering if anyone has used it
with a similar outcome? Or, has anyone had any adverse reactions?

I purchased some, unrefined, organic, cold pressed (as recommended). Haven't delved into it yet.

Thanks

coconut oil is high in the Omega 3's- so yes, it will help your skin, but not any more than flax seeds or whatever else you use for your omegas. it does absorb well as a topical cream too tho- & I like the flavor so....

It might be the coconut oil, it might not. Her explanation is purely anecdotal.

Her skin situation could be from any number of things that may or may b=not be accounted for...

      Just FYI.

Coconut oil is probably the most fantastic oil for your skin out there when it comes to repairing skin damage. There is a substance in coconut oil which wreaks havoc on damaged cells when applied topically, including skin cancer cells which respond to it immediately. I know someone whose skin cancer cells literally just fell off after the topical application of coconut oil (google coconut oil + skin cancer). I told them to try it after watching this vid by Jerry Brunetti:

    www.nuganics.com.au/2007/07/...medicine/

The part about coconut oil is in part 2 about ten minutes in.

I surf the web a lot, and have goggled coconut oil more than few times - I have not seen any reliable, objective studies that supported all the hoopla. I saw nothing about its being documented as high in omegas, but it is high in saturated fats - and it's tasty :P

      Of course it is a nice moisturizer;

I did find tons of sales-related infomercial-type "info", but no scientific, blind studies and so forth.

Who knows why your friend's skin patch fell off - but it was more likely a coincidence than cause - just my 2 cents.

Sorry Jewel, couldn't have been coincidence it worked just like Jerry said it would and not only that, but I found info supporting the same on the web ( again, google coconut oil + skin cancer). It was from ordinary people like you and me who worked through trial and error and found what worked for them and people they knew. So not from an objective scientific study though personally I would trust people 's experience over "objective science." The fact that there is no scientific study out there means that that particular study hasn't been done and that is most likely because of lack of funding for the research.

As far as I know I haven't heard anything about coconut oil having any Omega 3's. As posted above, however, there are a lot of other really great things in it, and that info above does come from peer reviewed journals. Again, saturated fats (the good kind) are not bad for you and saturated means it is highly resistant to rancidity which means it will not oxidize at high temperatures, making it a great oil to cook with. Yum!

As a side note, I have some friends from a place called the Haven Spa and they make some amazing skin products. I believe they are manufactured in the United States although I'm not sure you can get them there. But she says you should never put anything on your skin that you wouldn't eat. I googled to see if I could find you the products- all I could find was a blog that mentioned her

H'm, well, I googled 'coconut oil skin cancer', and this was the only cancer institute that mentioned coconut oil, and they only mentioned adding some to the diet, not the skin, and they didn't say why:

          www.apjohncancerinstitute.org/can....htm

All the other listings (on the first page anyway) were alt health & coconut oil sales pages, which I just don't take that seriously. The alt pages offered no references.

I'm glad some people feel it works for them, but so far I see nothing that actually supports that, just saying...

          Hi friends!

"Again, saturated fats (the good kind) are not bad for you"

I want to learn more about good saturated fats. Does anyone here have any good references that talk about this? I know that saturated fats in general take a bad rap.

          Thanks!

I use coconut oil inside and out, and just posted some good info on this fabulous oil on the healthy food for lazy people tribe under a thread on coconut oil(along with some references that Molly was asking for). I like to use dry brush massage before my shower, and then after, slather up with coconut oil...its the only moisterizer I use on a regular basis, for body and face...it's also great for makeup removal. Always use exra virgin, and organic! If you don't look under the thread I was refering to, just go to www.westonaprice.org/ for a wealth of information on a myraid of topics, including saturated fats...Aura

I take raw, unrefined Coconut oil, along with Flax, Borage, Primrose and Hemp, internally, 1 tbsp per day.

Additionally, I "swish" a teaspoon (+/-) in my mouth for 10 minutes a day after brushing

I also rub it on my décolletage each night as well as elbows and knees, around eyes and corners of mouth

Lastly, i give myself an "end treatment" once weekly (hair)

I have seen a lessening of adult acne in chin and forehead area during pre-mentrual times (I think the oils work in synergy
with balancing hormones and cannot say it is just the coconut oil), an increase in teeth whitening and pinker gums, increase
in overall health of skin and my breasts feel more firm (though it could just be all the push ups!). I haven't had split ends in years.
My bursitis which I would often get after long bike rides has all but dissipated (though I also take turmeric and ginger supplements)

Coconut oil is anti fungal/bacterial/microbial. There are also proven scientific studies on its role in reducing cholesterol
            and inflammation.

For the price (I use Spectrum Organic Unrefined 15 oz tubs @ $8.99) you really have nothing to lose by using it.

I love the stuff! I use a little in my cooking for things like stir fry - it makes a nice flavour. I don't eat it plain, I've tried it, but I'm not good with the straight fat. It's lovely as a pre-wash hair conditioner (make it liquid, put on damp hair, cover for 1+ hours), works well as a body moisturizer and a little goes a long way.

Also, I make air popped popcorn at home and add a little coconut oil to the butter before I put it on...makes it taste like movie theatre popcorn (yes, I know most find that disgusting...but I love it)

coconut water is good to hydrate with and has many benefits as well
        www.associatedcontent.com/artic...r.html

Coconut water is the liquid that is taken from unripe coconuts. If coconuts get ripe the liquid that is inside will harden and become a part of the white flesh of the coconut, which is used to make coconut milk. So, picking the coconut while it is unripe will ensure that the body gets all the benefits of coconut water.

        Coconut Water Hydrates the Body

Coconut water is an isotonic solution which replaces the fluids and minerals that the body loses during physical activities. For this reason, many athletes and persons who work out regularly are encouraged to drink coconut water to replace all the minerals and fluid that they lose while working out. Even the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) attest to the benefits of drinking coconut water when it fought for a patent in 2000 to market coconut water as the next big sports drinks.

        Coconut Water Relieves Urinary Problems

If you consume coconut water on a regular basis it can reduce urinary problems. People who suffer from strangury, polyutra and other urinary ailments drink coconut water to relieve their symptoms.

        Coconut Water Kills Intestinal Worms

Drinking coconut water with one teaspoon of olive oil for three days will kill intestinal worms and clear the stomach of worms, which makes for better digestion.

Coconut Water Breaks up Kidney Stones

People who have kidney problems and are plagued by kidney stones should drink coconut water in addition to taking their medication. Drinking coconut water regularly helps to break up kidney stones making them easier to push out.

        Coconut Water is an Antibacterial

Coconut water contains monolaurin, an antiviral, antibacterial and antiprozoal monoglyceride that is used to kill lipid-coated viruses such as HIV, Herpes, cytomegalovirus, flu and various pathogenic bacteria.

        Coconut Water Controls Vomiting

Coconut water is great at reducing vomiting. People who have typhoid, malaria, fevers or other ailments that are known to induce vomiting drink coconut water to settle the stomach. As such, coconut water is also a good thing to drink during a hangover.

Green or unripe coconuts can be found in Asian and West Indian markets. All coconuts that they sell are closed up to keep coconut water from losing its nutrients. So, if you plan on buying a coconut, you can ask someone to chop the coconut open or you can open it yourself at home and drink it.

I use extra-virgin coconut oil as my only body lotion - nothing else comes even close, unless it would be my combo of both unrefined shea butter plus the coconut oil. Loving this, and my skin is nice and smooth. I use my shea butter-coconut oil combo on my face at night, as it's a bit rich under makeup. However, on the days I don't wear any, I go with that combo. I haven't had as much experience with it internally, although once in awhile I'll put in a teaspoon or so in my green smoothies, as I eat a lot of raw food.
