Anyone using this?
www.smartskincare.com/tips/sk...416.html
I've been using it for a few days, and it's REALLY doing good things for my (acne-prone, combination) skin. It sounds freaky to wash your face with oil, but it really seems to work for a LOT of people!
(if you do a google search on it, you'll find a few long threads on it, one in particular from a "long hair community" that's 44 pages long and mostly positive results!)

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 10:33 AMHow well does it rinse off? Does it smell fishy?
I suppose since Shu Uemura and DHC both sell so much of their cleansing oil directed at oily skin, there must be something to it. -
-
Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 10:57 AMNeither castor oil nor olive oil smell fishy--are you thinking, maybe, about cod liver oil? Castor oil doesn't smell like much.
-
Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 11:15 AMShu Uemura and DHC sell what are basically overpriced versions of the classic "oil cleansing method"-- only difference is, they put a few chemicals in there that makes the oil wash off easier.
But I find that steaming my face with a hot washcloth, and then gently rubbing the oil off (rinse, repeat a few times).... it works really well! However, you have to make SURE to get it all off, since the oil is now carrying the gunk from your face, and you don't want to leave it on.
I'll report back in a week or two, but so far- it's wonderful!
(FYI, I'm using a combo of 75% extra-virgin olive oil, and 25% castor oil (odourless) that I got at Whole Foods, plus a few drops of tea tree oil into the big bottle of it. (Apparently, getting castor oil that's skin-grade is important- the cheapie stuff from the drugstore can be processed with nasty chemicals sometimes) -

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 11:24 AMOK, so in a search for castor oil, all I could find was a small bottle at CVS.
Where can you find the better stuff? What kind of store? -
-
Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 1:25 PMHealth food stores, or the "yuppie grocery" chains (Whole Foods, etc). Usually in the cosmetic/bath & body section, with the other oils.

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 10:56 AMThere was a thread on another tribe about using an oil mixture to cleanse:
what.a.mess.tribe.net/thread/...6a3b6a51
It uses honey, olive oil, neem, apple cider vinegar...interesting mix. My body liked it so much I tried it on my face. It was a bit too much of an oily residue at first, but after waking up my skin was happy--and I still have the occasional acne problem, so I was impressed. I might try this one and see how it goes...thanks! -

Thu, March 15, 2007 - 7:17 PMYou're right Katrina, I was thinking Cod Liver, maybe because of the other thread?
I can't wait to hear how this works for you HeatherLyn. You sound like the same skin type as me.

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Sat, March 17, 2007 - 2:50 PMThis method is basically the principle of the Erno Lazslo cleansing technique which was incredibly exclusive in the 70s. Of course Erno Lazslo made a ton of money selling the products.
People have used all kinds of oil combinations, that work for them. I'm a big fan of the DHC Cleansing Oil myself; I don't think there is a comparison between the principles of Oil Cleansing vs. The Cleansing oils of Shu Unemura, etc. except the initial oil application does a great job on cleaning any makeup you have on, including pancake makeup! But the newer cleansing oils are so easy to use, as they just rinse off. They also don't have the benefits of soaking/repeated rinsing with hot water which seems to help alot of people.
Read below for something I found on the now sorta defunct 3 Step Program once used by royalty in Monaco:
<clip>Erno Laszlo 3-step cleansing system:
Note: The basic Laszlo cleansing system comprises: Applying the oil to skin as a base; Filling the sink basin with hot water; Cleansing skin with the bar soap; Rinsing with 20 splashes from the basin to remove the product; Rinsing with 10 additional splashes of hot water after draining the basin; Then finishing with the toner.
Erno Laszlo PHelityl Oil
Tester: “I am absolutely addicted to this oil and the entire Laszlo skin care program! This oil soothed my skin and combination of oils and emollients to put on your face, before you cleanse it with the bar. you just smoothe it right on. At first I thought – put oil on my skin BEFORE washing it? But I read more about the Laszlo cleansing program (along with all the stars that swear by it) and I became a believer. By putting this oil on before cleansing my skin was soft, my makeup dissolved and it soothed any skin irritations I may have had. This is really the best first step you can take to cleanse your skin. I’m a believer now!” D.M. <clip>

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 1:02 PMWell, OK, I tried this a couple times over the weekend (75 EVOO/25 castor oil) and while it seems really odd to be glopping oil on my face, the results are nice. I did have to rinse 3 times with a washcloth (as suggested), and it still seemed a bit oily to me...but that went away in just a few minutes, then my skin felt really soft!
None of the over-oiliness I associate with the morning after the typical cleanse-tone-moisturize, either.
Added bonus...one of the uses of castor oil is that many women use it to darken their lashes and brows. I've tried using it that way, and I didn't think it was doing much. After using the oil cleanser twice, I think my brows may be a tad darker (which is good, for me)...hmm. -

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Tue, March 20, 2007 - 10:44 AMI've never used this product, but I basically use oil in my home made sugar scrub to clean my face everyday. I use grapeseed oil b/c it's is good for oily/acne prone skin. I don't use soap ever on my face. The recipe is just a combo of grapeseed oil, white sugar, a few drops of tea tree and peppermint EOs.

I don't know what castor oil is in french! -

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Thu, March 22, 2007 - 2:48 PMI cleansed with pure essential lavender oil once when I had a really bad breakout, and I could see a positive difference overnight. After doing it a few more days the breakout was controlled...

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 7:13 AMWell, according to the article, castor oil is the cleansing part, and olive oil is the moisturizing part, so you want a bit of each, with proportions adjusted according to how much you may need of each.
I'm not sure the word would change much from English to French, but the Latin for Castor bean is Ricinus communis, if it helps, and I know the plant is now grown in Europe.

Fri, March 23, 2007 - 7:14 AMMix it yourself--so much cheaper!
Though the commercial product may have additions you like, such as vitamin E (also pretty cheap by itself).

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 11:39 AMUpdate:
So, I've been using the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM) for little over a week now.
My skin is pretty broken out in the normal spots, but it was BEFORE I started..... it's not seeming to help. Or, shall I say, not YET. It might just be all the impurities coming out of my skin, I hear it takes 2 weeks before it REALLY starts to work. I'm waiting patiently.
The REST of my skin, however, feels and looks great, feels softer, looks more even. Another bonus is that it really gets all my eye makeup off. I'd been having issues getting my MAC non-waterproof mascara off, it would stay on & clumpy even after makeup removal. Now, zoom it's gone!
I think I'm going to add in a bit more castor oil to my 75% EVOO/ 25% Castor Oil mix, because I need cleansing more than I need moisturizing at this point! -

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Tue, May 1, 2007 - 1:11 AMI started this (olive oil and castor oil) regime a couple days ago and LOVE it.
My skin is super sensitive but it this isn't making it red or itchy as most new products or treatments do, and I haven't had to apply moisturizer in the mornings at all...still smooth and hydrated after a full nights rest on cotton pillow cases! Amazing.
My nose has always been a trouble zone for my face but the oils have helped clear those pores in only three days time. They aren't perfect yet, but the improvement is undeniable.

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Wed, May 23, 2007 - 10:45 PMAnyone know of an online source for the skin grade castor oil? I can't find anything but the drug store variety. About all we have here is a GNC & they don't have it.

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Tue, March 10, 2009 - 9:16 PMOkay, I just tried this for the first time tonight. ^_^
I have a question for those who have done this, do you just wash your face once per day or do you wash your face multiple times per day? Currently, with store-bought face wash, I have to wash multiple time a day or I get very shiny.
Thanks! ^_^

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Sun, June 28, 2009 - 7:40 PMI have acne prone skin (my pores clog easily), and I read on acne.org that washing with EVOO helped clear acne, so I decided to experiment. I rub EVOO on my face before getting into the shower...let it sit for about 5 minutes...then, I take a warm wash cloth and scrub it off. Then, I use Cetaphil gentle cleanser to wash my face and I use the other side of the wash cloth to remove the Cetaphil cleanser. When I'm finished my skin is fully moisturized and not one bit greasy. I've been doing this for about 5 months now, and my skin is the nicest it's ever been....I rarely get a pimple! I do this twice daily...sometimes I skip night time if I'm too tired. Oh, and I also apply Clindamycin gel that my dermatologist prescribed me after I wash my face...I swear by this stuff too!! It's gentle, doesn't dry the skin or make it greasy like other acne topical meds...it just kills bacteria on the surface of the skin so it doesn't cause acne... -

Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Sun, June 28, 2009 - 7:45 PMI gotta try ths..thanks for the tip!
-
Re: Oil Cleansing Method
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 8:46 AMClindamycin is amazing stuff. (And they've done studies that show that it works really really well with benzoyl peroxide as well...the two of them together work better than either of them alone)
I don't have insurance, so I bought a small tube of Clindamycin last time I was in Mexico (where you can get it without a prescription)....now squeezing the last teensy bits out of the tube. Sad panda. :-(
