just get a good quality lip salve, carry at all times, and reapply, reapply, reapply... (I use the tube one from clinique).
also: do you run a humidifyer in your home? Chances are you have very dry atmosphere.. get a humidifyer, and make sure it runs at night in your bedroom too. (also you dont feel the cold so much this way ;-)) ), if you dont want to get one, then hang damp cloths over the radiators or near your heating, so they will evaporate the moisture into the air. (it ruins the cloths in the long run though).

In the winter I need double the moisturizing as in summer, and your whole face could probably do with more.. I have used "moisture seal serums", for under the normal moisturiser, before in winter, and just omit in summer.., but you could also use a different strength moisturizer in winter.

hope you get it sorted soon, I know these cuts sting..!

I get this too....chapstick, blistex...anything really..but yes, keep reapplying. For moisturizer right now I use pure vitamin E oil...my house is that dry.

I second the Vitamin E oil. Jus bust open a capsule of it and rub it on, especially at night when you're less apt to lick (your lips:) and it'll stay on longer.

In extreme cases, the other thing I do is mix some of the E oil with a little neosporin and rub that on at night. Then use the lip blam during the day, over and over. Continue the treatment for 2-3 days after you improve, just to be sure you stay ahead of it.

and do not lick your lips.
Great recs on humidifying your room, but if you don]t have a radiator or $ for a humidifier, you could also place a bowl of water in your room refilling it periodically for moisture.

it sounds like a fungus to me...common thing to happen and it won't clear up with just moisturizers.

Use something for athlete's foot (Lotrimin creme) just on the corners of your mouth a few times a day....don't get it IN your mouth and don't lick it off. Fungus will cause dry flaking skin as well as cracking and as it gets worse it will cause splits that look like cuts.

I recommend Aquaphor ointment, made by Eucerin. It comes in a tube (4 oz?) and bigger tub, and is found in the body lotion/oils section of your local drugstore. It was recommended to me by my dermatologist when I had super dry lips due to taking Accutane, and is still what I turn to when my lips are at their driest. I have also gotten some very portable samples of it from a friend who's a nurse, so you might call your doctor to see if they have samples.

I LOVE Aquaphor - It is my absolute all time favorite cure all. Put it on at night and by morning you will notice a huge difference.

I've recently been turned onto Macademia Nut oil ~ my heels are a problem but this time of year my legs get so dry sometimes they crack... so I've taken to putting the Macademia Nut Oil wherever I'm really dry. You could put it on at night before bed ~ so long as you don't have a nut allergy.

Hi Stephanie, when I have any super dry or cracked skin, I go straight for the Neosporin. It's not as fancy or frilly as I would hope my beauty products are, would be, but it works!! Especially overnight. Put some on before you go to bed andy you WILL see a difference in the morning!!

Then you go back to normal moisturizers & treatments to prevent the problem again.

    Hope this is helpful!!

        *bump*

Stephanie, I wondered if any of these solutions worked for you.

I've had this from time to time, and it's always cleared up eventually. This last bout has been MONTHS and it's driving me crazy. I've tried smothering my lips with every balm, ointment, and goop on the planet, and I am beginning to think that's not the proper route. I think drying up the sores (if they are indeed caused by fungus or bacteria, ew) might be the way to go...

        Any suggestions?

I've never had the flakiness around my lips, but I have had other candida/fungus problems whenever I've taken strong antibiotics. Try a good probiotic supplement (check out Vitacost.com) and eat lots of plain organic yogurt. It doesn't work overnight, but you should see real improvement by 2 weeks.

Also, ensure that nothing you are using is causing the problem (I had a friend that was using a cream that had turned bad, but she didn't realize it and kept using for weeks until she figured it out). Check expiration dates of toothpaste, creams, sunscreen, etc. And check all products looking for changes in color, separation, consistency, smell, etc.

Try a healing spritzer made from 1 oz. brewed green tea and chamomile tea, a 1/2 tspn of apple cider vinegar, a couple of drops of lavender and tea tree essential oil, etc.
