Question for all the inventive and financially challenged women on BSFD:
What do you to stay on target with money while still meeting your beauty needs/wants? I have been forgoing highlights for months, but am going a little crazy with how my hair looks. Ditto for waxing, buying makeup, pedicures, etc.
How do you help yourself look/feel great without blowing the food/gas/cat food money?

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 9:48 AMTry a beauty school in your town for incredible deals. The students are heavily supervised and if there is a problem the teacher will jump in. I got my hair cut at one of these places here in Austin for $5. It looked great. The woman who cut my hair said they have to put in something like 2000 hours before graduating, so most of these students know what they are doing. -

Re: What do you guys do?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 6:17 AMoooooooo!! Lolo, you're in Los Angeles!! Go to the Vidal Sassoon Hair Academy in Santa Monica. The "students" there have to be licensed, working hair stylists with so many hours before they can even *apply* there...it's like graduate school for hair stylists. So you get *fabulous* work done for really cheap. I once went in for a $5 haircut (when I was a poor college student at USC) & the haircolor professor liked my cut so much that she had me come back & be a highlighting demo (a triple-process) for FREE. It was fantastic!

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 10:00 AMI hear you, I remember when I was a Grad student...oh, my! *shivers* But I still managed.
I didn't have a car so walking everywhere (really long distances, I was living in a non pedestrian-friendly city) definitely helped my figure :)
I never waxed (I still don't, I prefer shaving), I did and still do my own pedicures, granted it's not so fancy, but looks good. I saved on some things like nail polish (some times you can't really tell if it's Chanel or some cheapo drugstore brand) and invested on good skincare products. I (still do) preferred owning two or three good quality lipsticks that ten cheap ones. Similar cost, but the results are way better.
I combined my limited wardrobe. For instance: expensive jeans that fitted like a glove with a thrift-store top.
Combining your clothes with style does not cost any money, it's about mixing and matching well (well, speaking for myself, it's easier to combine when you wear mostly black ;)) and definitely makes a difference.
I have friends who sew their own clothes and save tons of money but that doesn't apply to me because I can't sew at all :(
And remember that looking great it's mostly about attitude and the way you project your image. I know many plenty of people with very little money that look impeccable and others that have the most fancy budget that look like....you know
Good luck!

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 11:54 AMIf you know exactly what you want, see if you can get the same thing cheaper on ebay--like clothes, shoes etc. (my latest ebay purchase is silicone bra inserts :))--it doesn't work every time, but I've saved a lot on a few items this way. -

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 12:29 PMNobody knows whether your makeup is Chanel or Wet n wild once it is on your face, and to be honest, I have bought very "off brand" eyeshadow at a beauty supply store that was heavily pigmented like MAC and "smooth" like MAC or lancome. I was more than happy with it! You don't have to spend a lot on makeup.
Beauty supply stores that cater primarily to an African-American clientele are a great source for very inexpensive eyeshadows, liners, lipstick/liners, and body glitter that have worked very well for me (yes, they have colors that pale skinned people can wear).
Look online for ideas for natural facials using things like honey and eggs. It works better than expensive crap and you probably own the ingredients already.
Clothes--try consignment/resale boutiques and/or the Salvation Army. A lot of rich folks dump their stuff there--designer stuff, sometimes still with original store hangtags.
Ebay, baby!

Re: What do you guys do?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 6:23 AMIf you "splurge" on a great eyeshadow case, like Urban Decay's (for $16), then you can pinch your pennies with the cheapo eyeshadows. A good base, which works under/with any color, will make Wet & Wild last as long and be as vibrant as a MAC shade. And it keeps it from settling in the creases. It's about knowing where to spend your money & where not to.
For brushes, don't waste your money on $30/pop brushes from MAC. Get natural-hair paint brushes from any art supply store instead. Also, HIP's new line of gel eyeliner is just as good as MAC'd Fluidline, but for half of the price (though MAC does have a TON more shades).
Don't get me wrong, I love my MAC, but I save my MAC splurges for things like foundation & powder....bang for the buck & all. -

Wed, April 16, 2008 - 4:17 PMWhen ever I get into a $$$ pinch, I'm a complete do-it-yourself girl! The end result doesn't usually stray that far from a professionsal, and I actually prefer the way it looks when I color my own hair!

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 12:49 PMSome very good advice being given here, ladies! My advice to you is prioritise what needs more money spent on.
In the case of make-up, things such as mascara, eyeshadow, blusher and lip glosses need not be expensive purchases as they don't really vary that much in performance no matter what you pat. More important ones that you should consider investing in are a good foundation (if you wear it) and lipsticks.
Being a practise for a trainee hairdresser is a great way to get a good cheap cut for free (this has already been mentioned but its such a useful one I have to 2nd it!)
For waxing it doesn't have to be done proffesionally. I understand the reluctance to shave as it doesn't last long and if you can't be bothered to do it often you end up with porcupine legs...niiiice. So, if you buy the strips instead of getting it done by someone else you can save - you could even ask a close friend to do it for you. There's also a method of waxing called sugaring which uses sugar cooked into a thick syrupy liquid and then you use fabric strips on top to pull it off. It can be an effective, cheap method, but only if you make the sugaring recipe right! There's a thread on that somewhere from one of my tribes, I'll post if you want to find out more.
Pedicures are more of an indulgence - perhaps you could do them yourself and then treat yourself to a beauty salon one every couple of months? There's plenty of sources on the net for how to do beauty treatments 'professionally' yourself-including stuff for nails
There's also a lot of homemade stuff you can try replace exfoliating scrubs, cleansers, facial masks, hair products etc. Again, just search the net and there's loads and loads to try! One thing I use the ends of my hair which is relatively cheap is coconut oil as a de-frizzer and for extra shine sometimes almond oil.
It really is possible to look great without the cat missing meals lol! :D -

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 2:02 PMa friend just posted an awesome tip on an e-mail list. she suggested that when you're going to buy something online, do a web search for "('insert store name here') promotional code" - she says a lot of times a discount code comes up that you can use on the store's website. i haven't tried this yet, but she says it works.
i love thrift shopping. lately i find better clothes in thrift stores than retail stores because i don't like most of the 70's and 80's inspired fashion that's big now. (um, the current styles were ugly the *first* time around, thanks but no thanks!) thrift town is my absolute favorite - giant stores and cheap cheap cheap. see if there's one near you. there are several in the bay area and their website lists all their locations. they have a mailing list too where they send out coupons and sale announcements. best. thrift. store. ever!
sometimes i do my own waxing for legs and bikini area. it's not actually that bad once you get used to doing it, though it can be messy. sugar wax is easier to clean but doesn't do as good a job as regular wax - results look totally fine but don't feel as smooth. i also have a braun epilator which is mostly what i use on my legs now and sometimes bikini area. it cost about $60 but will last a long long time, is easy to use, no mess, and not too painful on the legs. i have learned to tolerate it on my bikini area if the hair hasn't grown out a lot.
i love both drugstore and department store makeup. keep an eye out for drugstore sales on various brands.
i color my own hair too. it's kind of a pain but way way way cheaper than a salon.
i don't make much money, and i don't deny myself very much when it comes to beauty routines and products - it is doable! -

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 3:16 PMI never pay for nails, ever, they are easy and perfect with just a little practice.. If I splurge it's on a massage or specialized facial I couldn't do myself.
I never buy designer stuff full price, why? it's on sale somewhere! I will go to store try on what i think i want see if it feels worth it then record the style and size I like and hit the web. gotta be careful cause that impulse to BUY NOW is big.:)
I make sure to research skin products before I try them because often the intrigue is only as deep as the cardboard or the bottle...a few customer reviews will go a long way. While this is an area I will pay a bit more for, I will not buy a skin product that is over $50 ...and to get me to$20 it's gotta be gold plated good! I do not listen to sales people as the rule, of course from time to time there is an exception.
hmmmm....... I mend my clothes when I can (but I do sew) and dry very little in the dryer. Fabric lasts longer and color stays truer with air drying.
hope that's helpful!

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, April 16, 2008 - 3:18 PMI've always done my own nails, pumiced my own feet, etc. Hair-when it was long, friends gave me the required trims, since I shaved it, I'm in grow-out hell ;-).
Extraneous hair- there have been multiple threads on epilators on this tribe and homemade beauty secrets, I love mine. For about $55-60, it lasts about 4-5 years, which makes it cheaper than any other hair removal system. And, after so many years of using one, it's eroded regrowth to that of a 13-year old.
Shampoo and conditioner are heavily concentrated. Dilute with water to about 40-50% strength, you'll be thrilled how well it still works. -

Re: What do you guys do?
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 5:43 AMlook at all these resourceful ladies... ! wonderful advice and a great question. it shouldn't cost a lot to feel beautiful, that's for sure, because the beauty of the mouth is not in the lipstick, it's the sweet words it's speaks and the beauty of the ears is not the earrings, it's the way they listen compassionately (thanks, Amma)...
that said, i am always on the lookout for inexpensive and earth friendly things for beauty and fashion, also. plus, i don't want to spend my hard earned cash on buying into the consumerism of our society that feeds of our insecurities. never pay full price! ebay and thrift, resale...it's incredible the deals you can find.
i love parissa body sugar, really easy to work with and great results. i do my own pedicures. if you have lighter hair, you can always do the old lemon juice trick for highlights. i appreciated the thread on cleansing the face with oils recently. i think this is an overlooked suject, the healing and effecitive powers of oil for the skin. you don't have buy into the idea that you need to spend a lot of money to take care of your skin. i agree to find what are worthy investments to you such as massages and haircuts.
in general, it can be more fun and fulfilling to do it yourself. in a modern america of outsourcing everything, doing your own thing is subversive! i know people who spend $1000 a year on lattes. make your coffee and get a massage instead.

Re: What do you guys do?
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 6:17 AMI'm kind of hopeless about waxing myself but I can't afford to have it done either--also I am too wimpy for epilators--but if you want to feel smooth for a few days you can buy a bottle of Nair for $3. I splurge on a pedicure once in a while, it's not the same doing it myself! Since it's a special thing I get a lot of satisfaction from it. -

Re: What do you guys do?
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 10:56 AMOh, another source for good deals (though not thrift store good) is stores like TJMaxx, Marshall's, and Ross. You can find designer clothes, shoes, handbags, etc for a fraction of full retail price (for example, a Sigrid Olson sweater with the original price of $125 was marked about $15 at TJ Maxx, and it wasn't an "irregular" or flawed in any way).
You can also find designer perfume for good prices as well as *wonderful, high-end* body smell good stuff (and some skin care stuff) from France, England, and Italy for cheaper than the prices in Bath & Body Works
The secret is to visit these places often, as the good stuff flies off the shelves.
have fun!

Re: What do you guys do?
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 11:19 AMone way I keep my wardrobe looking current without spending a lot, mostly because I'm that rare beast that really doesn't like shopping...I buy everything in solid colors, to make it easier to mix and match pieces. Then when I see pretty colorful sarongs, scarves, accessories that are bargains at fests, I know I can wear them with other stuff.
One of my favorite catalogs is www.newport-news.com
And yes, never put clothes in the dryer...they last so much longer if you hang dry!

Re: What do you guys do?
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 6:20 PMi use epsom salts and baking soda for pedicures. my son gave me one of those foot bath machines a few years ago for christmas and i just add it to the water and soak. of course, you can always add you own scented oils. epsom salt and baking soda is cheap cheap cheap.
i buy cheap drugstore footies to wear when i moisturize my footies. slather on and suit up! ")
a very occasional purchase of cuticle clippers (which last mondo forever) and restock on orange sticks and emery boards for manicures.
I agree about the polish. For the most i buy drugstore, although i have purchased the upper end for special occasions. and i usually only polish my toes.
i'm not a very good waxer, so i stick with the shaving, which if you do every other night, keeps it easy breezy. I do use kiss my face shave cream. when affordable, and sometimes i just have to make it affordable, i get laser treatments on my face.
Witchhazel is great for everything.
Most of my makeup is drugstore, usually Loreal. I will splurge when i can on makeup for special occasions, like a new lipstick..
Im not sure about the hair. I go to sally's and buy the stuff to do it my self and its not to much.
Its more about prioritize (which i think someone mentioned). If your hair is the most important, then cut back on makeup to make it affordable. does that make sense? lol Good luck

Re: What do you guys do?
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 6:35 PMwait I thought of another good one--I've tried about every tooth whitening product out there, and for me using the strips you buy in the drug store every 6 months or so works as well as the expensive in-office whitening and is much cheaper. Kroger now has a good 7-day whitening kit for $18. -
-
Re: What do you guys do?
Fri, April 18, 2008 - 3:58 AMrinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide for about a minute before brushing your teeth is a good, gentle way to whiten your teeth. i bought a bottle of the whitening mouth rinse and it did make my teeth whiter. then i realized the active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide, along with some mint flavor and sodium laurel sulfate (or one of those things) to make it foam. frankly the foaming is annoying. so i just mixed hydrogen peroxide with a touch of mouthwash to make it taste better and it's a cheap, easy way to brighten my teeth. they're not super white like getting an expensive treatment from the dentist, but for the price and ease it's totally effective and worthwhile.

Sat, April 19, 2008 - 10:59 PMbenefit's eye shadow primer is awesome. it costs $20 but the jar lasts a really long time, and it works so well. my eye shadow lasts all day without creasing when i use it. -

Re: What do you guys do?
Sun, April 20, 2008 - 2:22 AMTea tree oil on a cotton ball w/ a little water keeps my face zit free and a tiny bottle lasts forever.
I do splurge on Shampoo and Condtioner because you really don't need much of either when washing so a big bottle of each will last me months. I just really don't like the harsh ingredients in the drugstore brands.
I use cetaphil to wash my face because its gentle and a big bottle lasts forever.
As for makeup well I will just say this: I was told in cosmetology school to pretty much go for the non-drugstore brands, but I still love my drugstore makeup. The only thing I would splurge on is foundation because I just switched to a drugstore brand and started breaking out. Bottom lie is they have a lot of the same ingredients as high end brands. Your paying for packaging with the exception of the really really good stuff out there.

Re: What do you guys do?
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 7:54 PMAlso, you'd be surprised how much product can get thrown away in an "empty" package. Use scissors to cut open used-up tubes of toothpaste, hair gel, sunblock, lotion -- there's always more that can be scraped out. Use a brush to get every last bit of your favorite lipstick. Use less detergent than the bottle recommends -- your clothes will still be clean.
Be cheap! -
