Egyptian Sugaring (instead of waxing)

topic posted Sun, February 3, 2008 - 6:48 PM by
I decided to give this a try cuz I'm just tried of always getting razor rash between my legs and I don't have the funds for waxing. Anyway, I founda recipe that seems to be tried and tested, and I followed the directions exactly, but it still didn't give me a strong enough adhesive quality to successfully remove any hair.

Just curious as to whether anyone else has tried this and if you've had better results?

you must make sure your skin is very clean with no oil and very dry, put talc.
apply against the grain and pull out with the direction of hair growth.

my issue is when i tried it, i think i made the recipe wrong cause it was too sticky and i couldn't make it into a ball it would just stick to my fingers. I was able to get some hair off but i felt it was so sticky. i think i made it wrong. or didn't cook it enough

I've been thinking about it, I know you can buy the sugaring 'wax' in The Body Shop. And I've scoured the ingredients and they're just the same as if you made at home, plus the consistency will probably be just right. I have a ten pound Body Shop voucher, so I might buy it with that (Its 10 pounds - extortionate if I didn't have the voucher!). Its also probably a lot less messy than caramelising sugar at home, and it has added sandalwood oil in theirs :)

Could you give me the method for making it at home though, I might try that out too? Thanks

i didn't know the body shop sold it. i will just buy it from there. but only if it is the type you use without strips.

by the way this is the chick to watch to see how to use the sugar product. I found when i did it right, it wasn't really painful, but i only tried it on my arms.

Oooh i'll have a nose at that link...I've been waxing my legs ever since I started hair removal (with a couple of shaves when I go on holiday), so I've found it isn't as painful anymore. And I'm not sure...they sell strips in there too next to it so maybe you need to use them with it. I thought that you had to use strips anyway?

i'm always interested in hair removal techniques that will minimize ingrown hairs, so i just made up a batch of this recipe. it's cooling on the stove now. i'll report back after i try it. it's gourmet sugaring too, made with meyer lemons from our tree.

mmm if it doesn't work you can just eat it. it tastes pretty good with non gourmet lemons.

i tried it tonight, and it does work, but it's difficult to get consistent results. each chunk removed some of the hair but not all. this was using the sugaring paste with no strips, just press on and pull off. it gets sticky pretty quickly, the first two or three presses with the same chunk will work and then it turns to taffy and sticks messily to the skin. it really did feel like i was waxing with taffy, kind of weird. unlike waxing, smoothing on talc or cornstarch is a necessity - it won't remove the hair at all otherwise, and you have to reapply the talc to the area if you need to re-do it for missed hair. i used cornstarch because that's what i had on hand, and that worked fine. i also found that pulling against the direction of the hair growth, as with waxing, yielded the best results.

i had better results on my bikini area because the hair was longer there. the hair on my leg wasn't quite 1/4" - having that length seems to be more important than with waxing. the sugar paste seems to grip the longer hair better, which makes sense.

i'm thinking that heating the paste and using it with strips might yield more consistent results and be easier to work with, although you will go through the sugar paste faster, and you'll need to buy strips. i also imagine that like with any slightly complicated beauty technique, it gets easier and more effective with practice.

i won't be giving up my braun epilator for sugaring, but i'm curious to see if i get less ingrown hairs in my bikini area from this method.

You've sold it to me! I'm gonna give it a try, but with the body shop one and strips :)

I've had bad luck with waxing/sugaring - my hair is very weak so it just breaks instead of pulling out, lol - and I also get terrible razor rash in the "delicate region". I like a very close, very clean shave, but for years I had to give it up or suffer the itchy bumpy consequences. I started using pure Aloe Vera juice/gel for my insides (have Celiac disease) and had used Aloe Vera gel from the drugstore to prevent the bumpies before, so one day I seperated a little into another bottle (I keep in the fridge) and tried it. Now I can shave once a week or so, which keeps the area pretty clean, and just dab on a little cold aloe gel after & let it dry. Now I get no bumpies... not sure if this would work for anyone else (& probably wouldn't want to use more often, that caused a different rash).

    Just something that works for me. :}

I've never been able to wax myself successfully--I can use epilators on some areas of my body but not the bikini area (the one time I tried it I actually bled, and wow did it hurt). The only thing that works for me is Nair--sure it stings, but just one of the little sacrifices we make for beauty right? :) At least no bumps and no ingrown hairs. But it sort of makes me wish it was the 70's and OK to just have hair.

If you are prone to razor rash, you are not likely to avoid a reaction from sugaring or waxing. Like others said, skin should be very clean and dry, powder is a good thing.
I waxed for years without cloth strips. If you are sugaring to avoid the cost of salon waxing, it's going to be cheaper in the long run to wax at home. Re-use the wax. When you re-melt it, get it really hot, the hair will rise to the top and you can skim it off with a plastic spoon or wooden paddle. Then let it cool to proper consistency to use again.
There are lots of threads on this that describe aftercare...
