Keeping dyed red hair red?

topic posted Wed, April 2, 2008 - 11:04 AM by  Roxy
Hello Divas,
Recently went from very light blond to red but I noticed it washed out on the ends. I know to try and prolong washing it, washing in cool water with color safe shampoo. What else can I do? I think I'm looking for a shampoo or some hair product that adds a little red. Anyone have a juicy product secret? If this helps: my color is ION called Light Copper Red.
thanks!!

At Sally's, they have a product called "protein filler", which you can apply to your hair before coloring it next time. The problem it sounds like you're having is that your lightened hair is now very porous, and the red dye won't hold. The protein filler helps reduce the porosity so the dye takes better.

I know of which I speak:

That having been said, red hair is still pretty high-maintenence. Good luck, Rox!

I googled and couldn't find ION anywhere. is it a temporary dye or permanent?

there are a ton of color shampoos out there that basically put some tint in your hair when you wash. you can also try putting temporary dye over permanent dye to get a really strong, longer lasting red. if you're using a light blonde base there usually won't be much depth to the color to begin with (red dilutes/screens back to pink or orange, it's one of the few colors that makes a whole other color when reduced/lightened). you could try doing a darker base first, like light auburn next time you dye.

red dye fades quickly, no matter what brand, no matter what application. it'll always need more frequent touch up to stay vibrant.

dilute your shampoo with water. you need about 20-40% of what you're using straight.

Keep your hair out of the sun, too, or use a product with sunscreen in it. Otherwise, a good color shampoo with pigment will be a good bet. I like Artech and Davines color shampoos and conditioners.

Definitely next time you get it colored, do a filler first. It does sound like your hair is too porous to hold on to the color.

thanks for all the advice! I went straight to Sally's and got the protein filler then redid just the ends. It looks terrific today, but only time will tell. I am going to use all the suggestions and keep my fingers crossed!
the color I used was: www.ioncolorbrilliance.com/Perm...s.asp
if anyone is looking for pretty red shades. Even though it's washing out I really do love this line- I used to use this line when I was blond.

oh, yes, the sun. I henna'd my hair right before BM, and it faded more than I expected just from sun. Ya learn, ya learn.

Aveda has great color conditioners. Just go to an aveda salon or store and they will be able to help you out. Their conditioners are more natural and deposit color to keep it refreshed.

I used to use Aveda Annatto Color Conditioner (a nice deep red) but they've stopped making it. They still make Madder color (a much lighter red). Better (but alas, more expensive) to have them make up a custom color conditioner to get a really deep or bright red that will make a substantial color deposit.

just looked up an aveda store and may stop by after work. Is it unnesessary to get the shampoo with tint in it? I should just get the conditioner?
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

you can get both. the shampooo is fairly inexpensive. but definitely, what you wash your hair with makes a difference. talk to the aveda people about it. if you use a shampoo that has mint in it, it can strip your hair color, so it is best to use something to protect the color, like their color conserve shampoo.
