fighting frizz

topic posted Sat, April 19, 2008 - 4:41 PM by  .Kim.
My hair is fine and blond, and I seem to constantly battle frizziness. Are there any low-cost deep conditioners, sprays, home remedies--anything that really works to help fight frizz? I usually blow-dry everyday (bad, I know)--and soon I'm going to try rag curls (done overnight) to stop blow-drying and prevent heat damage. What can I do now to smooth the frizz down and make my damaged locks look soft and shiny (not limp and greasy)?

Thanks for any help!!

We need more info--is your hair straight, wavy, curly? Do you normally wash at night or in the morning? How you style it can change how much frizz you end up with.

Things you might try: jojoba oil--just a tiny bit, a few drops rubbed into the palms, then smoothed over hair...a spray made from a spoonful of your favorite conditioner diluted to use as a leave-in conditioner.

As to what conditioners work...it's really highly individual, so it's hard to recommend. I've had some Suave conditioners ($1.50) work fine as my light conditioner, but VO5 (same price) or other formulations of Suave suck for me. I'd say get to know your ingredients--whether your hair likes/dislikes silicone, protein, oils, SLS...stuff like that. Then start reading ingredient lists.

i'm using sunsilk's 24/7 creme for frizzy hair (in the green bottle) before i style it. the stuff is cheap (~$5) and works amazingly well, especially when blow drying. i love it. i had my mom try it too and it worked great for her as well.

i found out, it wasn't the products it was that i needed a better blow dryer.

      More info:

My hair is straight and oily on top, dry on the ends; I wash my hair daily in the morning shower and then blow-dry; no other styling; I usually use Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal conditioner (which I like); I also use detangler spray while combing it out, and VO5 Sheer to smooth it down after blow-drying; I dye it every 2 months or so (I dye it a bright golden blond, 10NB, since my natural blond hue is getting more beige-based as I get older); I got an ionic tourmaline hairdryer for Christmas, but it doesn't seem to be much better for my hair than normal dryers; my hair seems to appreciate deep conditioning treatments a couple times a month, so I'd like to find one that is especially nourishing.

Thanks for your tips so far! I just got a few inches trimmed off my hair, which made a big difference. Next, I want to cut even more off to go for a curly 1930s bob, like Naomi Watts had in "King Kong". Hence the rag curl idea.

a couple of other thoughts based on new info- use less shampoo firstly and apply only on roots as you can, suds will run thru hair, conditioner applied on ponytail ends only, also the VO5 sheer may have ingredients that when used too often makes your hair dry (find silicone shine product thread).

(I just posted a few hair pics, including one of Naomi Watts that I plan to take with me when I get my next haircut.)

Mayonnaise and a plastic cap for 1 hour. It really does wonders!!

If your hair isn't dry all over, and is naturally straight I wouldn't recommend mayonnaise, as its quite a rich conditioner. Good for very thirsty hair tho!

Avoid any shampoo with Sodium Laurel sulphates, laureth sulphates, etc. These are very drying.

After I read an article in the LA Times about this - I switched to shampoos without these nasties - and my hair has been better ever since! The SLS-free shampoos do tend to be pricer, but not if but buy the Trader Joe's brands.

Also - add a bit of jojoba oil to your conditioner -- say a teaspoon per bottle -- you'll notice a big difference - at least I did!

Morning Kim, we have had some great discussions in the realm in the past. With your hair I would recommend starting with a haircut to make sure the ends are happy ana an ionic dryer- dries hair faster with alot less frizziness. Dryer weighs down the ions- no static. A lil hand lotion will help a bit as well on the areas that frizz, not heavy or drying.
Let us know how it goes.

My hair does not like the Pantene products at all. I recommend switching to something else a bit lighter and doesn's suck all the life out of your hair, but gently cleans it. Ask for samples at the beauty supply stores. If you ask a gazillion questions, it's likely they will give you things just to leave (as long as you purchase something, no matter how small).
