Natural sunblock?

Does anyone know of a natural alternative to sunblock? I'd really prefer to use something not so chemically-laden.

Also, every store-bought sunblock my sister has tried gives her a rash, so she would either like a natural one or one that is good for people who react to normal sunblock.

Thank you for any help! :)

I think covering oneself with a good sun hat and clothing is a very good sunblock - not so exciting and you don't get that wonderful feeling of skin kissing your skin, but it is a fairly effective means of sunblock (of course, depending on the type of fabric/material used). Mesh, for instance, not so effective. : )

      Re: The tomato article...

I remember seeing a Dr. Oz documentary on health and he talked about the tomato paste connection to an increase in sun protection. They showed a participant in the study... a woman who ate tomato paste every day (she spread it on crackers) and at the end of the study, they used a light gizmo to shine UV rays on her arm. If I recall, they used the light gizmo before the tomato paste diet and again after. They compared the amount of the skin's reaction to the light both before and after. The after light test did show less of a "burn" to the tested area. It was interesting.

Note how the very end of the article still states to still wear a sunscreen! Adding cooked tomatoes/tomato paste is helpful, but don't rely on it solely.

        well... I pile down tomatoes.

and if I'm in the sun for more than 10 min without sunblock I am a red lobster. I dont tan. I burn peel and then get freckles.

I have actual "tan" lines in freckles.

i think if you dont tan, nothing will enable you to tan, unless you spray it on :-) ... seriously when i was younger and didnt think of the damage i was doing i would load up on foods high in beta-carotene, it gave a better color to my tan, but i normally got a tan... it's really dependant on skin type... foods that are good for the skin, are good for the skin, but one has to consider genetics, since that is the basis, if you dont tan, whatever food you eat wont enable you to tan... :-) .. now i stay out of the sun, & wear spf 30 everyday.

"Kiss My Face" makes a great sunscreen line - including cream, spray and one for ears, noses and lips that comes in tube form and is easy to carry and reapply.

www.cosmeticscop.com will take tyou to the Paula's Choice website, which has tons of free info about specific ingredients, common irritants, in all kinds of skin & beauty stuff, including plenty of sunscreen info.

My facial, & even some torso skin breaks out like crazy from sunscreens. I buy unscented one- getting easier to find, especially in one's made for kids. Neutrogenia has a great newer line- the unscented sensitive skin line is working w/ few breakouts, not greasy, water resistant. I also like Jason's Sunbrella line, including the excellent self-tanners.I like Paula's choice self-tanner, too.
