I just had 3 hours and 22 inches worth of hair extensions put in a week ago and I couldn't be happier with the result! Matching my natural color wasn't so easy, but we found one that was close and then dyed my hair lightly to match the extensions. The first day was weird and I ended up going back for more of a trim to blend my own hair in a little better.
Anyway, I feel so sexy and beautiful with this one simple procedure. My own hair is curly and auburn and tends to only grow to a certain length (my upper bra line) and I've wanted really long hair ever since I had it cut off at the age of 11. Now I have it again and I am ecstatic. It;s so fun to put up or let it all go curly (and my own hair is nearly identical tot eh extensions regarding curl factor) or braid or whatever. And since I let it go naturally curly now (something I fought sometimes before) I have a great hair day everyday now.
Not so crazy about how much 'hair' I lose everyday, but it's for a good cause.

Re: (Real) Hair Extensions
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:14 PMHow long do those extensions last?

Re: (Real) Hair Extensions
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:27 PMI'll get some pics up soon.
The extensions themselves last for up to 6 months before an overhaul but need a maintenance check every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how often you shampoo, brush or use heated implements. Basically, I treat it like is my own hair and can do everything I would normally do except use oily shampoos.
Since mine is already curly I don't brush or comb it at all except when I'm in the shower and have lots of conditoner in it, and that apparently gives it a longer life on my head. The strangest part is all the teeny, tiny bits of waxy glue located about an inch or so from my scalp. I'm still adjusting to that part. Otherwise though, it's been great! And I've received so many compliments and silly questions like, "Did you get a hair cut?"
I've had complete strangers come up and tell me how beautiful *my* hair is, which is a little disconcerting as it's not ALL my hair, is it? But I thank them and walk away feeling just a bit more beautiful.

p.s. I did have a crazy burgeoning short story come to mind from all of this though....what IF my *new* hair belonged to some seriously nutty person? Would her (or his) dead epithelial cells invade my consciousness? Muahahahahahahahahahahahahaha -

Re: (Real) Hair Extensions
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:40 PMHere's a pic taken just tonight. They were actually about 4 inches longer than this at first but there was a noticeable mark between my hair and the extensions so I had them cut shorter. Next time I go in for 'maintenance' I'll probably have the longer one's added back in since my own hair is growing much more rapidly now due to the weight of the extensions.

Re: (Real) Hair Extensions
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 7:23 PMDid you have them bonded, the clamps, or the sewn kind? I'm having my waist length clamped ones in in a month! -
-
Re: (Real) Hair Extensions
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 6:44 PMI had them bonded, which seems to work well for me since I don't shampoo hardly ever and never blowdry or use other heating elements anymore. I just comb it out in the shower with conditioner, rinse and let it go.

Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:06 AMHi K, your pic looks great!!
I've been thinking of doing this myself (for volume) but haven't found any salon less that 1200 bux or so (real hair). Maybe for a really special occasion... =)

Re: (Real) Hair Extensions
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 3:07 PMI used to do the bonded kind, from a company called HairDreams. They ARE expensive. The hair is pretty good quality, though.
To do a full head, lengthening, it takes about 300 strands. When I was doing them, about 4 years ago, it was roughly $3 per strand, MY COST. The salon marks up the cost of the hair, so you're looking at anywhere from $900-$1800 or more *just* for the hair, that doesn't include the installation. So you're looking at a couple thousand bucks for HairDreams or Great Lengths.
That's also not including maintenence. With HairDreams, you were supposed to come in every 6 weeks to trim the shed hairs around the bonding point to prevent dreading. And yes, they can stay in up to 6 months, but as your hair sheds, that means there's less and less hair holding that extension on.
The other thing is, if the hair is the higher quality hair and is considered re-usable, when it's time to take it out, it has to be sent back to be re-bonded before it can be used again, at the time I did it, the cost to me was $1 per strand for the re-bond-it was recommended to mark that up, too.
Extensions are not cheap. Even the least expensive kind still requires buying the hair, and installing, which can take several hours, which is why it costs so much.

Re: (Real) Hair Extensions
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 11:20 PMThe hair itself cost me about $200., and the time was $60. pr hour. (It is real human hair) The initial time was 3 hours, and I need to got in for maintenance every 4 to 6 weeks, with a complete overhaul (meaning new extensions) every few months.
All in all it has been well worth it. Just today I blew it all out straight and did a Bridget Bardot style with a small; *poof* on top and little clips to keep it in place in the back. I have felt so dayum sexy every day since I had these extensions put in. People (that I know) have even asked me if I lost weight..which I haven't really. But because I have gorgeous hair now I look thinner and simply mre beautiful.
