I'm not a huge fan of toners, mainly because of the sting and irritation of the alcohol. I found one that I had liked in a Hi Health store. It was basically made out of witch hazel and aloe vera. I ran out of it, so I thought... hmmm... why not?
I bought a bottle of plain witch hazel and a tube of aloe vera gel. I filled a small spray bottle with about 40% witch hazel and 60% aloe vera gel. Shake. I spray it on my hands and rub it all over. Sometimes I'll spray a cotton pad and use it like a traditional toner, swiping my face (even my lower eye lids to help remove traces of eyeliner that wasn't removed during washing). It doesn't ever sting, even on my eyelids. It's very refreshing.
Just thought I'd share.

Re: Idea to share: Simple home-made toner
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 1:35 PMInteresting idea, Sasha. I use ACV myself (in the same ratio you'd use it on your hair, aplpied with a cotton pad).

Re: Idea to share: Simple home-made toner
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 1:39 PMI don't understand what toner is for so I never use it. Should I?
aside: when you work in the printing business "toner" means something totally not clean… -

Re: Idea to share: Simple home-made toner
Fri, June 12, 2009 - 3:39 PMhehehe... no, not printer toner! LOL!!!
Toner is just a step that some people like to help clean whatever normal cleansing doesn't do. It's also a skin freshener. I like to use more for how it feels than for any other reason...except the fact that this type is gentle enough to get rid of the nasty eyeliner stuff. I don't like to use a real "makeup remover" every day... just when I'm wearing more heavy-duty makeup (which isn't very often now, since I haven't performed in a while). But just the every-day liner. This stuff on a cotton pad helps remove all traces of the liner, all while making my skin just feel refreshed. -

Mon, June 15, 2009 - 12:06 PMDuck, I only use it if I'm feeling a little TOO greasy after using my olive oil for removing my makeup. That's about it. :) -

Re: Idea to share: Simple home-made toner
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 11:16 AMI've used toner for as long as I can remember. Having super oily skin, I always used it under the belief that it helped to control oil. That's what I told the dermatologist I went to a few months back when he asked my why I felt I needed to use Witch Hazel. Of course, he challenged me to not use it. The thought gave me major anxiety; the last thing I need is for my skin to break out worse than it already does !
I like the Dr (it helped that he's a total hottie!) so I did it. Instead I wash my face longer (especially at night to remove makeup). It felt like I was producing more oil for the first week or so, that balanced out quickly and now I feel like it's the same as it had been when I used witch hazel. The best part is --- breakouts have drastically improved!! So much so that my BF has commented on it a handful of times =D
In the last few weeks I thought to spot treat with witch hazel (I use a qtip); it really helps to dry out breakouts quickly (overnight~ish) but made me think "was I really putting that all over my face for all those years?"
Our skin problems are so unique, I don't think that what works for me is best for everyone. I'm just getting older *sigh* and am noticing that my skin care needs are changing and what used to work just doesn't do the trick anymore. Good luck gals!!! -

Re: Idea to share: Simple home-made toner
Fri, June 19, 2009 - 11:44 AMI had posted earlier this year a thread on the "one thing I did that cleared up my skin"... and it was washing longer. I had been a "speedwasher"... trying to wash my face as fast as humanly possible so that I could either get to bed at night or get to work in the morning! I have been washing my face for a full 60 seconds each time and it's made a HUGE difference!!
I like using a toner (and I do hate that word, since it doesn't "tone" anything!) really just to get the last bits of eyeliner off and to just give my skin a little freshening. It just feels good.
