Help! My boyfriend and I are going on a two week long road trip. I am super excited, but cant help wondering how I am going to stay diva hot and fresh in the car for two weeks!!! We are going to stay in a hotel only a few nights, and the rest of the trip is tent and car (shudder) camping. Any tricks to staying beautiful with few showers and make-up time?

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 6:35 AMBaby wipes are a good way to keep clean when there is no shower around. But, that being said, I think that one of the most beautiful things about people, is when they are least worried about how they look :-)
Have a great time on your trip.
PS: Alot of truck stops have shower facilities. Sometimes you have to ask, and you should probably bring your own towel. -

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 6:44 AMi think guys who are up for trips like that, find divas who are DOWN with the car camping (and car sex) HOT. seriously. They like the other side of you, where your hair gets a lil tousled, and you "loosen" up a bit.

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 6:45 AMoh yeah, maybe tone down the makeup to really au natual.
some how now, i only use a bobby brown shimmer brick, concealer, mascara and blush. thast SUPER quick, natural and very sheerly sexy. -

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 6:58 AMI like the baby wipes idea! I am less worried about looking good as I am about feeling nasty and grubby. I dont like not showering! I have really fine hair that gets really oily when I dont shampoo. Maybe I should start "training" my hair now by washing less (I usually wash it everyday). Do you guys think that will help with the greasies?
My boyfriend and I live together so he sees me au natural au the time. tx for suggestions! -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 7:10 AMMy hair stylist told me that a great way of combating the "greasy look" is to actually apply a small amount of baby powder / talc to your hair. It will absorb the grease. Does work -- doesn't actually remove the grease, but makes it much more pleasant to look at. :-) Having the greasy on your hair is an opportunity to try some new hair-dos too as it makes it hold a style much easier. And you can use the talc on your body to help prevent excess moisture, etc.
Plus, wide hairbands and bandanas are "in" right now.
Have fun.

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 8:22 AMyeah, powder can work well. They also sell "dry shampoo", which is basically the same thing, a kind of dry powder you put in your hair and then brush out. I'm not sure where they'd sell it, maybe at camping stores? Then at least you can brush it out and not feel quite so oily...

Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 6:07 PMBumble and bumble make a powder Hair shampoo that also adds back some Blondish color - a friend of mine swears by it. And you can get it on Amazon.com
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, May 16, 2008 - 2:40 PM2nd on the bumble and bumble hair powder. It is a little expensive, but it works really well. I usually put my hair in braided pigtails when I go camping.

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 9:30 AMWhen I go on long car trips, I break out the panty liners. They help absorb the extra sweat from sitting in a car all day. -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 10:17 AMDo you have a hairbrush with close-set bristles? If you brush with that, it will help distribute the oil through all of your hair so it won't look so bad. Also, for camping you can just wear a ponytail and throw on a hat or colorful bandanna/scarf :) In addition to the baby wipes, I'd suggest some scented body spray (more alcohol than in perfume, so it helps with the sweat). -

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 10:32 AM4 things you need in your make up kit..
Mascara, bronzer, tinted lip balm and a 2/3 compact of eyeshadows... I usually buy the blue/green/brown combo...
Actually there is a web site for women who back pack..
Try looking here for ideas.. www.backpackeurope.com/packin...es.html

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 10:34 AMOoppsss one move thing to add.. If you are going to be camping anywhere that there are bears leave all the scented stuff at home.. And never ever put anything with a taste or a scent in your tent at night..
This includes toiletries such as toothpaste and deodroant.. Bears have a nose and a stomach and 4 legs to get them from smell to smell.. It's best to put all that stuff in the car at night..

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 11:08 AMThink "uncomplicated". Here's what I do when I go on my rock star tours:
Get your hair, nails, and toes done before you go; that way you don't have to look at yourself and think "God! I need a beauty day."
Paint your nails with a neutral or clear coat instead of a a bright color that will show chips.
Choose comfortable clothes as good bases for outfits and accesorize.
Choose clothes that aren't going to look like hell if they wrinkle.
KISS - 2 jeans, 4 tops, 2 tank tops, sweatshirt, 1 skirt, 1 shorts, undies, socks, 2 bras. 1 pair of sandals, 1 pair of lip flops, 1 pair of athletic shoes or hiking boots.
Always pack a sexy nighty! Surprise him with it around the campfire ;)
Pack one packet of a deep conditioner and 1 facial on-the-go, any drug store carries them. They are my emergency rescue for when my rock star lifestyle is starting to wear me out. Hit the shower, deep condition and do a facial, then BAM you're a Diva again.
Let your guy see that you're a wild gal with a devil-may-care attitude. You don't need tons of crap to look great, you just do that for kicks.

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 11:26 AMWear the heaviest shoes if you don't want to carry them!
I do that when i travel on the airplane.. I keep my cosmetics handy at all times, either in car or on plane, so i can do little touch ups as i need to... I carry a toothbrush and antibactirial hand wipes with me at all times.. I couple sets of jewellry that you can mix and match for going into town is nice.. I take a dress and a gypsy style skirt with me in the rv too.. Also travel with clothes that go together.. My rv wardrobe is mostly navy blue with a few lighter blue pieces thrown in.. A button down shirt can double as a jacket on cool evenings.. Pair that with a skirt and you have a nice outfit for going out to dinner.. I always drag dh out for dinner in places that have nice resturants.. Like Banff or Jasper, Alberta...
If you are ever in Jasper check out La Fiesta on Patricia St!
I also get my hair, nails and toes done before i go.. One other think i do is have my eyebrows done.
Where are you going btw?

Thu, August 10, 2006 - 11:44 AMI love you guys! Great tips. I am getting excited and want to start packing today, even though we are not leaving for another week.
We are driving from Ontario to the east coast of Canada. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. We might even hit Maine. I will let you guys know how it goes and share my beauty secrets that worked. -

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 12:12 PMbring some flip flops or easy slip ons so you can take your shoes off in the car. -

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 12:18 PMFlip flops can also be used for slippers in the summer.. But a word of caution here..
According to my pedicure lady, the skin under your toes will crack more easily. I also use flip flops if i have to use the shower in the campgrounds or in the pool change rooms.
BTW, if you ever get to Jasper check out Miette Hot Springs. They are the hottest in North America. They have to be cooled done so you can get in..

Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 12:12 PMI actually forego any nail polish when campling or on car trips. I switch to and oil rub every morning on the cuticles. It makes your hands look great and your nails nice and shiny without have to worry about chipping at all. -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Thu, August 10, 2006 - 12:16 PMI love OPI nails polish.. I can rv camp for 2 weeks on a pedicure. I usually take along a bottle for touchups but rarely need it. If you have it you won't use it.. Hahahahahaaa....
I usually do my cuticles before i got to bed.. I use Solar Oil on recommendation of my nail tech.
I also put lotion on my feet just before bed... I have to us unscented but it still keeps my feet from cracking..
Yes these ladies have some great ideas that i am going to use for our trips too. RV, car and cruise!

Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 6:38 AMVanessa, good luck, it's not easy to be in a car that long and maintain your Divaness. I know mine fell apart on a roadtrip with a BF. here's my advice: eat extra healthy. If all you're doing is sitting in a car for days on end you won't need extra cheeseburger calories anyway. It will really help not feeling "gross". -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 9:38 AMgood advice- and drink lots of water! don't forget the sunblock if you'll be outside. -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 9:40 AMEven if you won't be outside - make sure that you put it on your "window" arm or you will end up with the worst lopsided tan. :-)

Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 10:02 AMActually drinking lots of water on a road trip has a side effect.. You know?
I usually pack fruits that are high in moisture.. Oranges, Apples, nectarines and grapes.. I prepeel the oranges so we don't have the mess to deal with in the car.
Hat and sunscreen are a must... I also keep Off bug towelletes in the car/truck.
We take a big lunch bag and pack it full of sandwiches and fruits and eat at picnic grounds, in the car and rest areas.. Saves time and money! We pull a trailer so we can't go thru the drive thrus.. Hahahahaaa... I know alot of gals that take a cooler with them whenever they are in the car. You can buy ice every where!.

Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 10:05 AMWhen I drove across country, I found that grapes were a bit liquidy, and made me have to take a lot of bathroom breaks, which was a nuisance as the SW is not known for a lot of rest areas or even gas stations. Peaches and especially plums were great substitutes. I love the peeling of oranges idea .... that's a good tip.
As well, this sounds silly, but I also packed my car with extra pre-mixed coolant for the car, oil and a roll or two of toilet paper. In the event of any emergency. :-) -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 11:08 AMIt's not silly to pack emergency supplies in your car, I've bailed out many a man with my jumper cables. I have a rain poncho, flares, can of fix-o-flat, duct tape, rope, rag, a gallon of water, and a multi tool in my trunk.

Fri, August 11, 2006 - 11:31 AMJazebel --
That's an awesome kit. I actually changed a man's tire on his truck before with my gear .... he had a bad back or something. Phew .... I never knew I had that in me.
I need to get some flares and a poncho. Those are really good ideas. -

Re: Diva on a road trip
Fri, August 11, 2006 - 11:34 AMI've never changed a tire! I am married to a mechanic or i call the Auto club...
But i know how to... And i can jump start a car too...
Always always carry tissues with you...

Fri, August 11, 2006 - 4:48 PMOK, this may be TMI but if you are (like me) not a Woodsy Diva and would rather pee standing up like guys do, these are LIFESAVERS. I have several packs and take 'em camping, to festivals where porta-johns are the rule, and when travelling in general:
www.femalefreedom.ca/
They're called PMates and they're disposable, which I love... easy to carry in purse or pocket. Good luck and have a great time!! -

Re: Diva on a road trip
Sun, August 13, 2006 - 11:33 PM1. Anything but perfume. Natural stench is better then natural stench covered up with Chanel Number 5.
2. I have really fine hair too. I use Lush products-they have one to extend your need to shower. Its primarily made up of corn starch-which will absorb the oil, then you can brush it out.
3. The french do it-bring a spray bottle filled with water, with a few drops of lemon and essential oil-spray your face with it to keep moisturized and fresh.
4. Drink tons of water! It will keep your complexion clear and your oil production down.
5. Hairties, booby pins, whatever it takes to keep your unavoidably stringy hair out of your face.
6. Do the maintenance stuff-plucking, redying, cutting split ends...whatever you do right before you leave. That way your at least starting off on a good foot.
7. Dont forget-just because you feel self concious in your bathingsuit-still try to enjoy the beach. -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Sat, May 10, 2008 - 6:33 PMI agree on the hair pins, clips and hairties. My hair is always getting out of control and in my face.
I would splurge and buy a beauty on the go kit. I like this one, but there are many others:
www.sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml
Dry shampoo is good and face wipes are a god. Bring hats incase you have a bad hairday and don't forget baby wipes and your shades.
Keep your makeup bag to a minimum. Bring what you absoulity must have and leave the rest at home. Camping and road trips are a time for you to not realy worry so much about how you look!!!
Don't forget the first aid kit!! -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 11:22 PMI so-o agree with this, and also about keeping it simple in the makeup department! And don't bring your whole bathroom's worth of stuff with you either. A good cleanser or wipes, plus your moisturizer and sunblock make you feel human when on the go, and the dry shampoo/baby powder idea is helpful too for oily-haired gals. If you really want to go minimalist, just bring along some Dr. Bronners castile soap - this can be used for tons of things from simple handwashing to washing out a t-shirt. Hopefully your BF appreciates you au naturel(he should, as well as when you doll up other times!) Comfortable clothes and shoes you don't have to fret about either. Water is your most important thing to have in the car - it will help you stay away from all those convenience store sodas. Some fruit, veggies sticks, and nuts will help you avoid all those junk snacks too and you'll feel better. Most important is that you enjoy your trip together! -
-
Re: Diva on a road trip
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:48 PMI do multi-day wilderness trips.
Must haves:
A comb or brush
back-up hair ties
I find that braids are really cute, easy, and hide any icky greasy hair. So does a sexy hat with the braids, and they are so so fun to wear, easy to dress up, and keep your hair out of your face. Plus, braids make hot "oh shit" handles for your bf when you get it on.
Alcohol-based scented spray for the pits. The alcohol kills bacteria, the spray scent mixes with your odor to make you smell really good.
I carry mascara and glitter eyeliner in three colors, plus two lip glosses with SPF (aveda makes these). That way you're hot AND sun protected.
Baby wipes, yep.
clean socks and undies.
Other than that, you can pretty much live in your jeans.
OR other option- on the river when it's hot, I hate shorts. I wear skirts ONLY when I'm off river (shorts on river), which allows me to air out my ass, feel sexy and dressed up while knowing it's a $5 thrift store skirt, and be super comfortable.
A toothbrush is a must.
Have fun, and be safe.

Fri, May 16, 2008 - 2:43 PM"Get the unscented baby wipes for sensitive skin. They don' t smell super weird."
I second that. I accidentally picked up "lemon scented" wipes at the store. it made us smell like something between bathroom cleanser and a car air freshener.
