I have recently decided to grow my hair out again. It has been only chin length for awhile now and since I started letting it grow, it's to about my mid-neck now. Prior to my decision to grow it out, it was stacked in the back. So currently it's at a place where I can't style it the way I did when it was short, but it's also not long enough for a new style. So I'm trying to decide how to deal with it while I'm waiting for it to grow out. Also, when should I get it cut and how should she cut it, or should I just let it grow until it gets close to the length I want?

Re: that "in between" stage
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 12:15 PMI'm in this satge and have bene for while.... i went to my stylist and asked for a trim that would grow out nicely that was several months ago and now I just touch up my color and don't trim it... I don't heat style often and I use oil in the ends of my hair to prevent breakage. I want it grown out and it's working fairly quickly, keeping the color up makes it bearable.

Re: that "in between" stage
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 1:02 PMi am trying to grow my hair out as well and was chided by a hairstylist for not getting semi - regular trimmings...at least once every three months. She said that its not just about split ends. The problem is the split can end up running all the way up the hair shaft if you let it sit too long. This is the first time regular trims made sense to me while growing hair out - i previously thought it was a conspiracy to steal my money.
So I'd say, lay off the heat styling, get a good balanced shampoo - protien for strength, moisture for softness (another one from the hairstylist) - and trim once every three months. Also, don't wash your hair with shampoo more than once every other day, even moisturizing shampoo. If your hair needs a refresh on an off day, just use conditioner. Should be fine unless you have been rolling in the mud that day.
I've been doing that and my hair has been growing and, more importantly, staying pretty healthy throughout so i hopefully wont have to trim much off when i go in again.
