Ok, so I've never worn fake eyelashes - neither has my mom, I have no sisters, nor do any of my female friends. But I'm in a play that opens Friday, and have to wear them now so people can actually see I have eyes from the back row.
My question is, how do you wear the dang things? I have the lashes and the glue. How do you get the glue on them? Or do you put glue on your eyelid and then put the lashes on *ugh*? Do you wash your face with soap and water to get them off? Or just pull them off? Doesn't that hurt, and leave residue on the lashes? Any special care for contact wearers, as I'll be wearing contacts for the play?
Just chock full o'questions here.

Re: False eyelashes
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 10:25 PMI was able to find this website:
www.beautychop.pair.com/eyelashes.htm
I don't know about the "liner" information that this page starts off with, but it might be worth a try.
What I would add to what is written on that site is before you put the glue on the lashes, hold them with 2 hands and sort of "roll" them back and forth (kinda like you're playing with a tiny little Slinky) to make the band of the lashes more flexible. This will allow them to more easily conform to the shape of your upper eyelid. This is a trick taught in beauty school.
If you have time (and possibly a spare pair), try to practice before your show.
Don't just "pull" them off after your performance. I would use a gentle eye makeup remover on a cotton pad and hold the pad over your closed eye for a few seconds. This will help to loosen the adhesive.
Personally, I am a fan of the individual clusters of lashes when I want my eyes to have more presence. They are a little easier to apply and they come in assorted sizes. I'll use the large size at the very outer corner and then switch to medium towards the center (trimming one of them down). Usually only 1 large and maybe 2 medium per eye will do the trick.
Good luck! -

Wed, June 8, 2005 - 2:52 AMAlso, if you cut them in half and glue them in parts the lashes will place much easier.
A friend told me this and it did make a big difference! -

Re: False eyelashes
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 7:21 AMGood idea! I'll have to try that trick next time! It seems that the bands can be a little inflexible (that's why the rolling them back and forth trick). But it just might be easier to cut them in half. Thanks for that tip! -

Re: False eyelashes
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 3:24 PMDefinately practice before the play, I haven't used them in years but I remember that strip lashes were too long for my eyes, so I l'm sure you will want to cut them. Also they feel heavy and you will have to get used to that. You don't want any surprises on the night of the play. Have fun and good luck! -

Re: False eyelashes
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 5:53 PMalso, i use a toothpick to get the glue onto the strip, and let it set for a minute before putting it on my eye.
as for getting the glue off, i use olive oil, and it's been workin' for me.

Re: False eyelashes
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 9:07 PMDEFINITELY practice with them before the play. I've been wearing fake eyelashes for about three years as part of my Sisterly Habit and I still have bad eyelash days.
When you take them out of the case you'll want to bend them in a bit as someone has already suggested. Apply a thin line of glue across the band and then let them sit -- I usually go get dressed while I'm waiting. You want the glue to be tacky, but not set; about five minutes. I then use my index finger to press the centre of the lash onto my eyelid and then smooth down each side. If you find that you've applied them too high (so they don't blend evenly with your natural eyelashes) you can usually gently slide them down. If you've misjudged the centre and they stick out too far to either side, it's usually best to pull them off gently and reapply. You should not have to reglue unless you pull them off and put them back on more than a couple of times. Once I've got them where I want them, I use a nice waterproof mascara to blend my natural lashes with the fakes ones.
I'm assuming you will do so anyway, but make sure you take your eyelash glue with you. If they pop off or one end comes loose, you'll be able to reattach them. It has been my experience that only the really long ones are that heavy and until I've been wearing them for about eight hours or so, I forget they're there.
As for taking them off, I usually just pull them off because I'm impatient. I've never tried using makeup remover first. Yes, I will often get eyelash glue residue on both the lashes and my lids, but the remover usually gets that off. I've never heard of using olive oil -- I'll have to try that. You can wear fake lashes more than once. I always clean mine with rubbing alcohol before I put them on again to reduce the chance of infection. The advantage to rewearing them is that they're easier to apply when they've been broken in.
Good luck and many blessings! -

Re: False eyelashes
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 4:20 PMHow do you get mascara off of fake eyelashes after you've worn them? The ones I have are very thin and delicate, and I don't know how to get the mascara off.... -

Re: False eyelashes
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 11:55 PMIf you lay them on a paper towel and "stroke" them with a cotton swab that's saturated with makeup remover or olive oil, start at the base/strip and gently run the swab down the lashes to the tips. If they're up for a little rough stuff you can clean them in your palm like you would a contact lense. That was hard for me to explain without using visuals, I hope it made sense. By the way, I have to say this thread has the best lashes advice I've ever read.

Re: False eyelashes
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 9:06 PMThanks, everyone, for all the great tips! Wish I read all this before dress rehearsal (there just wasn't time!). But between what I learned in practice tonight and now from reading this thread, I know better what to do. I'll have to trim them for sure (WHY do they make them so long? What human has eyes that LONG??), and maybe even cut them in half. I didn't know plain eye makeup remover removed lash glue as well.
Again, thanks for all the tips! -

Re: False eyelashes
Thu, June 9, 2005 - 9:31 PMWell, you're definitely not getting this in time for now, but for the future this is a good thing to know. Get the "Single Short Lashes" in black (available at ANY corner drug store) and pour the glue onto something non-sticky (I always use the container the lashes came in). Place the tip you're sticking on to your lid into the glue (be sure to line your eyes FIRST! liquid or pencil ALWAYS do this FIRST!!!) and then set as close to your lashes as possible. Don't touch the lashes and just let dry while they're on. AFTER they've set, do your powder makeup and/or contacts, and then mascara. I've been doing it this way for years and even my family can't tell why my face "just lights up" on occasion. I personally concentrate the lashes towards the outer edges and use about 7-15 lashes per eye depending on the natural/drama factor I'm trying to create. They're quite addictive!...the effect is so good you'll want to start using them daily! Good luck, it's worth ALL the effort. You know you're doing it right when you can go sans makeup and look natural (the best way to practice by the way). As far as taking them off goes, I've never gotten past the trichotillamania (pulling them off phase)....but I know for sure they can last through at least one night of not going home and removing make-up. I hope this helps!!! -

Re: False eyelashes
Fri, June 10, 2005 - 9:22 AMDon't forget that false eyelashes come in different lengths, too. I've seen (and worn) crazy out-to-there lashes for that over-the-top diva look. -

Re: False eyelashes
Sat, June 11, 2005 - 4:12 PMalso for stage work you do want to wear the liner and then lashes, with the lashes slightly above your lashline, as well as slightly long past the end of your eye. it makes your eyes look huge from the audiences perspective.
