I bought it. Tried it for a few days. Not impressed.
OK, so it does make lashes look pretty long, but I don't think very much longer than any other lengthening mascara (either 1 or 2 step). The package says to keep applying while it's still wet, don't allow it to dry in between. I don't know why. I applied it with more brush strokes than I normally would do, got a nice look, and then I *ALWAYS* go over it with a clean dry brush to smooth out any clumps. Looks good.... for a while.
My issue with this mascara is as they day went on, it flaked. Not smudged, but flaked. I didn't hit the gym, or dance, or apply any wetting drops (I wear contacts). At the end of a 12-hour day wearing this stuff, I looked at myself in the mirror and could see little bitty black flecks of fibers and such under my eye and even on the top of my cheek. This alone will keep me from buying this product again.
Maybe your mileage will vary and you'll have better results. I mean, it's drugstore so it's certainly easy on the budget so try it if you're curious, but I think I'd personally rather use Lash Exact (also Maybelline) or Voluminous (L'Oreal). I think both of these stay on better than the Stilletto mascara.
Just my 2 cents on the topic.

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Thu, February 5, 2009 - 10:37 PMHere's another 2 cents on a related topic.
I'm sick and tired of cosmetics companies showing women wearing FALSE eyelashes while trying to sell mascara! GRRRRRRR!!!! That should be against the law.

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Fri, February 6, 2009 - 12:05 AMI just saw one of their ads on tv and the model's lashes are insanely fake. I've got long false eyelashes that I wear for performance and they're not nearly as long as the one's in the commercial. There is no way a mascara can do that to real eyelashes. That would be a feat in gravity defiance, methinks! Not that I ever believe anything in commercials.
But lots of performers wear mascara with/over their falsies to blend them into their own lashes. So I guess then it would be believeable. Whatever. I don't like mascara anyway. I'm just babbling. ;} -

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Fri, February 6, 2009 - 7:14 AMTarte makes a mascara that temporarily dyes your lashes. It's called 4-day mascara and I think I'll buy myself a tube for my birthday.
I have long lashes, those "lengthening" mascaras just got clumpy on me. I want something that's going to darken my blond lashes and not give me raccoon eye.
I agree, companies should be fined for misrepresenting their product results. No airbrushing and no prosthetic parts should be allowed in advertising. Full disclosure on how and where their product is produced would be really nice too. -

Fri, February 6, 2009 - 11:35 AMHey Jezzie....I think it not a coincidence (or perhaps) that you take the name of my favorite website which is
VERY anti-airbrushing , false advertising for women etc

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Fri, February 6, 2009 - 2:46 PMI'm leaning towards aiming for improved lash growth & health, so they look better when I skip the mascara...
I recently ordered some lash-growing treatment from Skin Actives, about $10. They also sell on Ebay. They have their own labs, and created a protein that apparently helps lashes grow, but without side effects (unlike the glaucoma drug just out to apply to lashes.) -

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Wed, February 11, 2009 - 7:21 AMI saw a blurb about that in 'In Style' magazine. Let us know how it goes.
Ebay! I hadn't thought about trying to find Tarte 4-day mascara on eBay. Sephora has it for $18 +shipping and with my income level I have a tough time justifying spending $20 on mascara.
Jezebel.com is my favorite spot too =) Fashion, sex & celebrity for Feminists! I love the articles, Titianna The Annonymous Model is one of the most compelling contributors on the board. My website is www.jezebelblessing.com

Thu, February 12, 2009 - 10:34 AMhi everyone, i have never heard of a staining mascara until now, but based on the reviews i'm not sure i would want to try the one by tarte. anyone know of any others like it? that sounds like a product i would love to own... -

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Fri, February 20, 2009 - 6:44 AMI went to Sephora and checked out there best review on mascara. Hourglass Superficial Lash is their top rated mascara so I went and bought a tube for myself.
Yes it's $30, but worth every penny. The Sepia color is perfect for my blond lashes and the formula was perfect for accenting my luscious long lashes without making me look like Tanny Fae. I would recommend this stuff to a friend even though it was pretty pricey. -

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 2:10 PMStilletto is HORRIBLE and it stinks!
My fave is L'oreal Voluminous (reg or carbon) in Blackest Black.
FYI...for Lancome lovers...L'oreal is Lancome's parent company (or vice versa) so your basically buying Lancome for drug store prices. Ask any Lancome rep. -

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Wed, April 1, 2009 - 2:41 PMLast I recall, both Lancome and L'Oreal were owned by Cosmair... but that was in the 80's.
I also like Voluminous. :o) -

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 11:38 AMthese new products out claiming that they grow eyelashes longer & thiker, how do they work? i mean eyelash length and thickness are pretty much determined with genetics. from what i can understand.
i actually started mositurizing my lashes before bed and they seemed so much healthier, theyre much fuller and longer now & i just used a premium oil (my new thing to get mascara off at night)... after about 3-4wks family and friends started asking me about my lashes. i was getting so many compliments.
so i am wondering if eyelashes for some, minus genetics, are just thinner and shorter cause they are dry, causing them to break and fall out.
i would still love to hear about experiences with eyelash growth/thickness products...and if you moisturized eyes daily before trying these products... its cool if you find reasonably priced products like was mentioned on this thread. hey if it works for $10-20, even if it turns out to be just a really good moisturizer, it is still a good deal... but what about the product out now that you need a prescription and some exxtra cash to throw around? i have heard prices ranging $100-$200... that's alot of moola if its comparative to just moistrizing lashes so the dont become brittle and break!
curious.

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 11:45 AMIve heard that the new stuff to make you lashes longer can actually change your eye color. That freaks me out.
Castor oil on your lashes at night will make them healthier and thicker and longer.
Cover girl lash blast is my FAVE mascara ever. And i just tried their new Luxe version (I got the green one) and its amazing. Your lashes shine this subtle amazing dark green in the sun. When I wear lash blast people have asked if i was wearing false lashes. I think it looks like diorshow but doest dry out as quickly in the tube and is a WAY better price.

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 1:31 AMTalika eyebrow lipocils works great on lashes (the eyebrow one has a better applicator than the lash version)...its pricey though...A cheap version that works is from Ardell but Ardells version stings badly and you get a gluey crud on your eye when u wake up,yuk...With Talika you can wear it out of the house without scaring people lol...Keep in mind lash growth serums with only let your lashes grow to their natural max length and not more...i noticed a difference but it was not huge...it was enough for me to invest in it if i was going to get married or something (use for 3 weeks b4 seeing results). I will try castor oil to see how that works.

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 11:46 AMI bought Stilletto & yeah it does flake easily. Still, I'll use the product until it's time to throw it out...I bought it, after all.
What I like about it: it gives thin & precise lengthening coverage on the lashes, so you don't need a shit-ton of it for daytime use.
Not especially good for tired/eye-rubbers like myself. -

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 4:09 PMI'm a big fan of outlast(covergirl) mascara.
To grow lashes, I use a dab of castor oil on them at night. Works great for most people, and is really cheap at the drugstore.

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Mon, July 27, 2009 - 6:19 PMhmm, mine never flakes... I get great results! my massage therapist saw my eyelashes and said "wow, what kind of fake lashes do you use?" they make my lashes super freaking long!!! i love this mascara and I think it actually works. (everyone is different, it works very well on me) -
-
Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Mon, July 27, 2009 - 6:20 PMoh if you go over it after it dries, then it will break up the lengthining fibers and bring them back to your normal length, and also cause flaking during the day. -
-
Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 7:15 AMWow, it's been 6 months and the Hourglass 'Superficial Lash' is still going strong.
I love this mascara! Totally doesn't flake, run, or give me raccoon eyes. The sepia color looks great on my blond lashes and it gives them miles of length. This is a mascara that is worth every penny. -

Re: Stilletto Mascara...
Sun, November 22, 2009 - 11:36 PMI'm a fan of Bad Gal mascara that I get at Sephora. I saw that Sephora is offering a mascara sampler for Christmas pretty cheap, so it's a great way to try different brands without going too broke.
Here's the link to the Sephora mascara gift set. I see it has that Tarte lash stain too (cool!)
