Just to add to those previous threads, I thought I would put in my two cents. I always do my shadow & liner first, and mascara to my natural lashes (forgot to do this once and realized the tips of my lashes are definitely not black, so next to the false ones the tips looked blonde - had to start all over). I apply the lash glue to the lash strip, not my eyelid (these are the instructions that have always come with the lashes I buy - I don't think it's ever occurred to me to apply it to the lid instead; I may have to try that next time). Don't put too much glue on; wait a minute or so before applying, so the glue isn't too wet. I've tried starting from the inside corner and the outside corner on different occasions - I this it's a matter of practice and figuring out which direction you're more comfortable with. Make sure the strips are attached firmly all the way along - I usually hold it there in each corner for a few seconds to make sure the ends don't pop off. After the glue dries, touch up and/or add more liner & a bit of shadow if needed.

Oh, I forgot - they should remove easily afterwards by pulling outwards from the outer corner (I just grab the tips of the lashes at the end). This past weekend I think I used a little too much glue in one outer edge, so some got onto my natural lashes, which hurt when I tried tugging - I just used my finger to add a tiny bit of water in that corner then pulled it off with no problem. After I pull them off, I always try and pull off as much of the dried glue as possible, so they're not all goopy the next time I want to use them.

One time I guess I was too lazy or in a rush, and I basically splashed my face liberally with water before pulling them off - they were very wet - I laid them in the tray and spread them out to dry. Had to throw them out - even after leaving them overnight and then trying to comb them out nicely, they still looked like tiny drowned rats! Ever since then I make sure I don't get them wet.

I always cut off the inside end of my false eyelashes before I apply them. Eyelashes that go all the way across visually close your eye a bit. You get that Marilyn Monroe sleepy look. So I clip mine so that they end right about at the edge of my iris.

what glue do you recommend? I don't really wear fake eyelashes because they drive me CRAZYY!!! they make my eyelid itchy... so maybe it was the glue?

I agree with applying eyeshadow and mascara first, and putting the adhesive on the falsies, not the lash line. For myself, I have found that putting it on the falsies allows me to get it much closer to if not right on top of my natural lash line so that they blend into my natural lashes and there's no need for eyeliner, which tends to gunk up the lashes faster anyway and together with the lashes is too much makeup for my eyes to handle. For me, I either wear falsies *or* eyeliner to make my eyes pop/look bigger.

As for the Marilyn Monroe-esque effect, I have found it depends on the style of lashes I get and a person's induvidual bone structure as to how falsies will look. In general I've found the thick ones tend to give a more drag queen-esque look (for lack of a better way of putting it), while the sparser, random ones give a more natural yet super-human effect. I tend to go for the "more natural yet super-human" look and have found 2 that work great for my eye shape--Ardell #125 and NYC Glamour [they both have a random length thing going on which helps them look more "natural", and are shorter towards the inside of the eye getting longer towards the outside which really opens the eye, AND both are cheap and can be found in most drug stores, and work better for me than any expensive ones I've bothered to waste my money on].

I agree that experimenting wiht trimming the width of the lashes till you find what works for your eye shape is a good idea, especially since sometimes the lashes can be different widths and apply great to one eye and fugly on the other till you trim it into the right length.

About lash glue, I swear by Ardell Lash Grip Eyelash Adhesive, which isn't too pricey, lasts forever and can be found in practically any drug store. Like any eyelash adhesive give it about 30 seconds to a minute to start to get tacky before you try to put on the falsie, otherwise it won't stick to your lash line. A bit of practice and you'll become a pro at knowing when to put it on. :-)

Unfortunately the itchiness may just be from the falsies, not the glue. Wearing them is something I definately had to get used to, and sometimes they just *are* really itchy when I put them on. It has to do with the application of them and where they're sitting/resting, but if they look good I just put up with it for the night/photo shoot.

Re: glue - I think mine is Ardell. If your lids get itchy, you *could* be allergic, or as already suggested, it could just be the lashes themselves and where they're placed. Maybe you should try just putting a bit of glue on your eyelid by itself and see if you feel any kind of reaction - then at least you'd know which one is the culprit. :-)

Ok you have all inspired me to buy a set (which I did last night), now for some practice........ wish me luck!

I might even take a photo, depending on the results. ;-)

i hold eyelash application classes for my drag queen clients sometimes. I agree with everything posted, however, i instruct people to start application in the MIDDLE of the eyelid. Usually takes about 2 times of practice.

Then i take a dab of glue on the end of a bobby pin and swipe it accross the false lash / eyelid... for good measure.

Oh my gosh, that's true! You are so right, and I completely forgot to mention that.

I also start from the middle of my eye. I hold the eyelashes right in the center and stick it to the middle of my eye, paying close attention to how it's lining up with the inside of my eye. That way if it's a little to far to the inside or outside I can gently pull it slightly one way or the other to get it lined up *just* right before sticking the rest down.
It's also easier to get it closer to the lash line that way, because your essentially sticking it 3 different places: middle, line up, then inner, and last of all outer. It works great--I rarely have to take them off and start over.

I don't do the last swipe thing, probably because I don't wear eyeliner with them, but I have used bobby pins or toothpicks with a dab of eyelash adhesive to fix any lashes that aren't sticking on the inner eye.
