I need a new reasonably priced skincare line. I have sensitive skin that is oily. I was never oily all over just in t zone but lately it is outta control, my make up just slides off within like 30 to an hour. I have used darphin which I love but it is sooo pricey, the salon I worked at carried it but now I dunno what to use. I have been using Cetaphil for normal to oily skin but I swear it has gotten worse. I drink a ton of water, eat decent, not a whole lotta stress, no hormaonal imbalances. But a few weeks ago I got a facial and she told me I have dry skin, ok I am in the biz I think I know what dry skin and anoil slick is but is there something I'm missin'? AHHH the madness, I hae never had this problem. Any suggestions?

Re: skin care blues
Sat, November 20, 2004 - 1:32 PMshiseido has a line for oily skin. It is expensive but I love it. I switched to Aveeno Positive Radiance scrub and positive radiance moisturizer. It's a tad thicker then I would like but if you use a good blotting powder (MAC has a great one) after you apply your foundation and after you apply your powder, you will notice a difference. Plus, during the day instead of using powder to refresh your face use the blotter powder and if you are still having problems, buy some blotter papers for your face. Use them throughout the day, when you need a refresher. -

Sat, November 20, 2004 - 7:06 PMI noticed my skin got worse when I used Cetaphil, too.
I know Neutragena has a bad rep, but I use one of their liquid face soaps (not the amber stuff), I think it's called Healthy Skin? and my skin is much better now.

Sun, November 21, 2004 - 6:35 AMI really like Aveeno products. Try the Complexion Care bar. I have oily skin too, but I keep it under control by powdering every couple of hours. I use Loreal's Visible Lift powder (I think that's the name); I don't like the other powder Loreal has out. -

Re: skin care blues
Sun, November 21, 2004 - 10:06 AMYeah, Ceta tends to make me overproduce oil - I think that's the problem with that line. When you have oily skin, certain cleasers have a tendancy to strip your skin heavily, and then you overproduce oil (not really scientific reasoning here, just what I've noticed). I like Aveeno too.
I am a person with weird combo to oily skin. My skin appears to be smooth and reddish brown with freckles, but quickly becomes an oil slick (hard to keep make up on and I shine like the sun), and if I get the occasional pimple, it usually results in hyperpigmentation (dark spots). But the best product I have ever used was the Proactive line. I LOVE it. I am not kidding. This stuff has worked great in terms of controlling oil. They have the cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, but they also have a matte finisher that works very well. Once I moved, I stopped ordering Proactive, and my skin sort of suffered.
But if it's too much to order that, be sure that you try a cleanser with a scrub quality to it. It helps to clear away the extra skin cells that tend to stick to oily skin, and then follow that up with an oil free moisturizer (Oil of Olay oil free IMO is too oily still though).
Also there are other product lines that have anti shine matte finish creams, like Philosophy (that's a good one) and Neutrogena makes one that I have been using recently after I moisturize and before I put on any make up.
And powdering every couple of hours is good too, but because I have a reddish brown complexion that's hard to match even in a transleucent powder, I've been using oil absorbing sheets - they work very well throughout the day. -

Re: skin care blues
Sun, November 21, 2004 - 12:08 PMI also have lots of skin problems. :[ At about 27, I must have had something hormonal happen becuase my skin is awful and I have problems with acne.
I think getting a once-a-month glycolic facial helped a lot with that, however while I've been in grad school for the past year and a half I really can't afford to do that.
I am product-loyal, have had good success with Murad but it's expensive and they reformulate often which is a drag cus once you find something you like, it may not be available in the same form the next time you want to buy it. I also really like Aveeno, and have been mixing their daily moisturizer with another more intensive cream for day.
I also really like Dermologica's daily microfoliator, I think exfoliating is really important to keeping down breakouts and maintaining good overall skin texture. I will only powder like twice a day, more than that and it looks like the undertaker did my makeup. I just blot in between. Oil absorbing sheets are also awesome.
One thing that I really have problems with is that my skin is reddish, not like rosacea, but I am 1/4 hispanic, 1/4 native american and 1/2 danish so my skin tone is just....reddish. acne makes it so much worse, instead of scarring it's like I get a red mark forever and that's also impossible to cover up right with makeup. I let my bangs droop over it, which probably perpetuates the acne cycle. :[ -

Re: skin care blues
Sun, November 21, 2004 - 6:56 PMI have been wanting to try Proactive alot of my salon buddies swear by it. I swear cetaphil's original product is great but the oily/normal combo is awful. I want my Darphin but it is way pricey. Thanks for input! I forgot all about the blotting powder, my mac girl will see me soon. -

Re: skin care blues
Mon, November 22, 2004 - 8:54 AMA couple of years ago I was reluctant to try Proactive because they made it seem like it was for the absolute worst of the acne prone skin - I thought it would be overkill, but it's not. It's good because it seems pretty versatile. My hubs, who has that smooth, velvety dark chocolate skin that is sort of sensitive and tends to get dry (totally opposite of my red, aggitatable combo/oily skin) used it too and got great results. He would only use the toner once a day, though, instead of twice a day like I did. It is definitely worth a try. -

Re: skin care blues
Mon, November 22, 2004 - 9:08 AMCool, it seems relatively easy to find also that is my problem with some of the other things I have used in the past. Either expensive or hard to find. Does anyone also know of anything remotely similar to darphin unlikely but worth a shot. Thanks again! -

Re: skin care blues
Mon, November 22, 2004 - 2:07 PMYou mentioned M.A.C. if I can offer one bit of advice it would be not to use M.A.C. face products. They are extremely heavy and can cause a lot of clogged pores. I love their lipstick, eyeshadows, everything except for their powders, concealers and foundations.
I really like N.V. Perricone products. It is about $30.00 every month and a half. Not unreasonable considering how great my skin has been!

Re: skin care blues
Mon, November 22, 2004 - 6:54 PMYes, they are extremely heavy. It was ok when my skin seemed more dry, but now I do need to change. I moved from a dry climate to a more moist climate, I think that is most of the problem. That's not too bad, price wise, I don't mind spending alot on skin care my problem is I moved to a small town from the west coast. It is so hard to find a decent product here. Everyone here uses clinique, No thanks. So I have resorted to internet shopping and random trips to Atlanta. I'll have to do my online sephora shop, and invest in some new makeup also. Thanks. Just overhaulin everything I guess.

Re: skin care blues
Fri, November 26, 2004 - 6:27 PMThere is a cheaper product with all the same active ingredients as Proactive - and you dont have to buy all the companion products that really don't do much. Its called Clear and Smooth:
www.no-acne.com
I have been using it for years now, and it has made a HUGE difference (except right now, who knew the wrong toothpaste could make such a big ugly rash on your chin!!!) -

Re: skin care blues
Fri, November 26, 2004 - 8:53 PMAs of a couple of years ago, I always get a red blotchy patch around my mouth after brushing if *any* toothpaste gets on my skin. It looks like a giant hive, and goes away in anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. I thought I was the only freak. Probably it's time for me to switch to a more nature/human-friendly toothpaste. -

Re: skin care blues
Fri, November 26, 2004 - 9:27 PMI got it from Toms of Maine, but only the whitening version.
